Just wait until it gets in front of a jury.

That's not normal in most places, although who knows what goes on in America, the land of litigation. |

"When legally requested" is a bit rich when information about this power is buried in the small print of the terms and conditions. Perhaps they should have a large sign on the door just as you enter Don't get too comfortable, if we want your seat then kindly just piss off or we'll drag you out. Nah, why be open about something that's so embarrassing, as I said in another thread they should reserve a row of seats on each flight rather than being greedy bastards. I hope they enjoy the publicity storm coming their way

Now I don't know about US flights but it seems odd that no one took up the offer of $800, a night in a hotel and a flight the next day. I would have thought on a plane full of people that at least 4 people would have been able to move their plans around. If I had been on the flight I would have called my boss at work, told him I would be a day late due to a airline issue and took the $800.
Slightly different I know as a tourist but many years ago coming back from Florida on Virgin they had overbooked the flight.. So they offered $500, a hotel room for the night, a flight the next day and also a free first class return ticket to anywhere they flew for people to drop out. You should have seen the rush to claim that. However after saying that it seems to me that if I book a seat then I get the seat. They are happy to stiff you if you cannot make it by refunding only part of your flight costs. However they can then throw you off you booked seat if they feel like it through their own system of overbooking every flight. It seems a little one sided there. Also the most annoying thing here is that they were not removed for other fare paying passengers but employees. United screwed up and I bet they regret now not getting those employees to their destination another way. |

I don't even understand how this can happen. In this digital age, if there is overbooking they should at least notice this in he check-in phase, right? Who leads on a passenger and makes him get through all the damn controls and passport checks for nothing? Or do they expect passengers to die or disappear between check-in and boarding? What kind of amateur company waits until people are seated on the plane to then take them off?? edit I'd take that offer, i rarely make 800 dollar in a day! |

Of course it wasn't the usual overbooking situation...which should not be allowed to happen. My understanding is that its a rort carried out by the airlines on the assumption that there are always no-shows so they take the risk of selling those seats (even though they have already been paid for). Imagine if theatres tried that...I guess they can't because you buy/reserve a specific seat. |

That is the thing I would have thought more than 3 would have taken the offer as unless you really had to be somewhere the offer seemed too good to turn down. I believe they could have gone as high as $1350 as compensation. It therefore makes you wonder why they didn't do that before letting it go to this stage. If they had made that offer you can bet at least one person would have taken it and all this bad press would never have happened. I know they say any publicity is good publicity but this is likey to cost them far more than the $500 they scrimped on.
