The 70s was crap. 3 day week, powercuts and shortages, rubbish on the streets, package holidays to Spain(Torremolinos and Benidorm), and the hottest bloody year until 2003. However, kids were allowed to be kids, the television was better for kids and families and if you collected your empty bottles and took them back to the shop you bought them from you got cash back-halcyon days

Unshaven pussy, big hair, shoulder pads, Mork and Mindy, Tony Danza, Starsky and Hutch...eeeewwww! While the past always looks better looking back, I lived through the seventies, they weren't that shit hot.

When porn was illegal in the UK and you watched the occasional black & white 8mm silent hardcore movie with a few pals, while trying to pretend your weren't over-excited about it. Something in colour was rare and always special.

- Kids read comics. Adults read the newspaper, or occasionally books
- Fake wrestling was a joke sport that required body building; real wrestling was called Greco-Roman and required intense physical conditioning. - Cosplay was something the retarded neighborhood kid would do and was grounds for hospital evaluation - Rock and roll was fun and considered juvenile and/or painful noise by mainstream society. - Females did not talk or sing about their vaginas. - US was the most powerful manufacturing nation on the earth, plenty of jobs and you were expected to have one. - Knapsacks were carried by either boy scouts or people going camping. - The Drive-In repeated the first movie so you didn't have to miss it. |

Wha' 'Appen?
Due to some quirk in the licencing laws in 70's Australia i was legally able to drive when mainland Australians of the same age were just obtaining their learners permits.
I wrote my first car (a Mark 2 Ford Zephyr) 'off' a week after getting my 'P' plates Anyway, the thing i miss most about the Seventies was the almost weekly week-end ritual of a group of us piling into my second car and just heading off, usually with no destination in mind. No consideration at all about time, nor the cost of petrol. Of course all things get a little clouded in the mists of time, but i miss those guys and girls from a time before agendas of family and careers took precedence. |

Getting hot wheels at the gas station when your Dad filled up the tank.
Finding your friends Dads Playboys. The smoking room in high school. Getting laid for the first time. Getting high the first time. Being able to get totally drunk and high and waking up the next morning ready to go again. |

Having $5, $10 or $20 bill and thinking it was the most money in the world.
Spending above money on candy, comic books and Pac-Man. Arcades/Video Game Parlours. Before Atari, before Intellivision and way before X-Box you actually had to go and play video games at an Arcade. These places were always a little bit dicey in my neighborhood and my parents begged us to stay out. Of course we didn't. They smelled like BO, had teenage hoodlums hanging out at them, and were a haven for drug dealers. God, I miss those places. Skid Rows or Red Light districts. What the hell happened to them. I know they still exist to some extent but they have been cleaned up or destroyed to the point where they are now nearly invisible. My hometown had a thriving Skid Row where homeless, drunks and hobos could grab a room for the night/week/month for cheap. Where you could find friendly ladies and houses of ill repute because thats where they were. The places were run down and sleazy but dammit....it was a part of living in the City. Saturday mornings of cereal and cartoons. Snow sliding/sledding with your friends. Boot hockey. Street hockey. Nerf footballs. Itsa footballs. Jumping on your bike and going wherever you could without Mom and Dad worrying about you. Climbing trees and falling out of them. Getting the wind knocked out of you or scraping your knees and your friends standing around waiting as you shook the pain off. School reports on typewriters. Having to "clap" the chalkboard erasers after school as a punishment. Epic snowball fights on the playground at recess. The last day of school for the year. Was there anything better than that? Fistfights. No bats, no knives, no guns just two kids beating each other up and settling their differences and moving on from there. You made peace after they were over. You moved on as friends or had a mutual respect for each other. No revenge, no vendettas, no jump ins, just a friendly ass whooping. I think we need more of those in the world today.

The good old days.............When going out for the night was great.
Your entire existence centered around going out on Friday and Saturday night to some bars or nightclubs. No or only a small cover charge, pubs had a great live band or acoustic duo, Waitin' in line to get in was for out of towners Didn't need photo ID or have your ID scanned by the door bitch and bouncers before entering. When gettin' thrown out and banned for life was really only for a week or two. When drinks were drinks and not these stupid Red Bull things. When drinking competitions were encouraged. When you could smoke in the places When you had a serious hangover on Saturday afternoon, only to have a worse one on Sunday

Ahh the 70's, when concert tickets were $12.00 and the women wore no bras with their tube tops and halter tops. Cops looked the other way when smoking a joint at the concerts. Now you light up a Marlboro and they run you in.
