I think nearly every working actor has made one or two clunkers in their career but these men and women, IMO, have made consistently good films. Most of them are still working save for the first two but I didn't see them mentioned before.

1. Gene Hackman - Ever since Bonnie and Clyde the guy has made good movies. I know there has been some mis-steps but French Connection, Unforgiven, Get Shorty, The Conversation, Superman, Reds, No Way Out...the man has made some great movies.

2. Robert DuVall - Always good and always believable in my book. He's Col. Kilgore and he's Tom Hagen. 'Nuff said.

3. Sean Penn - Shanghai Surprise not withstanding he has been in many good films throughtout his career. Jeff Spicoli to Harvey Milk he has done a wide spectrum of roles and deserves credit for that alone.

4. Kevin Bacon - Excellent actor IMO. Very underrated. I know we all pine for the days of Footloose but this guy has been in some very good movies and always does a great job in my opinion.

5. William H. Macy - A little more inconsistent with some of his movies but the guy is simply awesome in Fargo, Boogie Nights, The Cooler and Magnolia.

6. Robert Downey Jr. - A little, well maybe alot, different about this guy but what a great actor. A good actor before his jail stint I think he has been simply outstanding since then. Tropic Thunder performance alone puts him on the list.

7. Philip Seymour Hoffman - Very underrated IMO. He was the only funny thing about the movie Along Came Polly. Capote and Doubt are both excellent and his supporting roles in Boogie Nights, The Big Lebowski and Almost Famous are great too.

8. Steve Buscemi - Again I am sold just on Fargo alone. Throw in Donny from the Big Lebowski and I am all in with this guy.

9. John Turturro - Another guy that shows up in many fantastic movies. Do The Right Thing, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski allow me to forgive him for Mr Deeds and Zohan.

10. Jodie Foster - She has always been one of my favorites. I remember seeing her as Becky Thatcher in Tom Sawyer. I think the next movie I saw her in was Taxi Driver. She still has that kind of range.

11. Meryl Streep - Always good in my opinion. The Deer Hunter is one of my personal favorites and she is simply amazing in it.

12 Jeff Bridges - Well let's just say I have a soft spot for the Dude. But he has been excellent throughout his career. The Last Picture Show, Tron, Starman, Seabiscuit, Fabulous Baker Boys, The Fisher King........the Dude more than abides.

Like ubu_roi, I don't watch movies because a particular actor/actress. It's more the "whole package" where the director and his story are the priority. A good actor can't save a bad movie. All the mentioned actors here, with some great names included, have also been in lots of awful movies.

I don't really have any "Must See" criteria, but I do have many "Don't Watch" criteria. For Me to make the effort to go see a film,It's usually a combination of factors, previews, reviews and it having piqued My interest sufficently. As regards movies on TV,I frequently watch films that I wouldn't dream of going to the cinema for and am often pleasantly surprised.

Like others on this thread, I don't really have a "Must Watch" criteria (although Christopher Nolan's films are getting close to becoming the first must watch films ).

Every excellent actor has made some real dross over the years; Robert DeNiro seems to be making a habit of appearing in total turkeys instead of his classic roles in Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino or The Godfather Part II.

Having said all that, I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises, mainly to see how Bane and Catwoman are portrayed (and judging from Chris Nolan's first two Batman films, it should be good).

A good sign for me is a classification as b movie. Mostly, an independent production with a small budget can also be a clue. But not always.
A good novel is also important as a template. Such as in 'Das Boot'. The novel was written by Lothar Günter Buchheim, and the film was consistently influenced by his own experiences as a war reporter on a German U-boat during WWII.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lothar-Günther_Buchheim

But sometimes, Hollywood has also something to offer. For exemple, a good movie was, in my opinion, 'The Wrestler' with Mickey Rourke by Darren Aronofsky.

Many good points have already been made and Estreeter's top ten list comes close to my favorite contemporary actors. So here's my top ten of other actors who have also made a very strong impression on me - sorry for all the others I'm not thinking of at the moment.

The last picture is of French actor Pierre Fresnay (1897-1975)

Default Who makes a film a Must See ?

If i`m in it.

Oh and displaying gratuitous nudity in no way integral to the plot.
