Contrary to popular belief, the public aren't stupid (there are specific exceptions of course) and have memories. Most will remember the refinery blockades a decade ago and many will remember the tanker drivers strike in the early 1970s. I do, what felt like hours (I was about 4, so of course it felt like hours) sat in the back of Mum's Vauxhall Viva HA queuing up to buy fuel. The fact of the strike ballot was enough to make people aware that there could be problems getting fuel and trigger the queues. Decanting petrol in the kitchen with a gas cooker on is not clever though. I wouldn't wish what happened on anyone, but what did she expect? It is mixed with air and ignited then explodes in a car engine to make it go, allow it to evaporate and expose it to a source of ignition in your kitchen and it's going to explode and you really don't want to be around when it does. It's not brandy on a Christmas cake that you have to put a match to and only burns gently. |

The real problem lies within the fact that the people who've panic buyed have only made things worse.
By doing this they'll cause other people to do the same & we've already seen the consequenses of what can happen when this occurs. I hope that she'll make a full recovery.

insane logic
Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure of my facts but the threatened Tanker Driver strike is due to working conditions; particularly hours.
The drivers are allowed to work an extra two hours per day and these hours may be stopped. Well that's crazy. A driver, even with a cargo of soft toys, has to stop work after 8 hours on the road. If he continues to drive he will be breaking the road laws. After eight hours there is a greater chance of him falling asleep at the wheel etc. Yet a Tanker Driver with a cargo of petrol is, by law, allowed to do an extra two hours road time per day. What sort of training do they get that means there is less danger of them falling asleep at the wheel after nine and a half hours compared to a normal driver nearing eight hours (SPEED/UPPERS)? I'm going to lobby for drivers with TNT cargos to drive a twenty hour day. I mean, what could possibly go wrong ? |

It's not exactly 8h/day, it was 9h/day typical with limits on total hours per week and other things.
It is curious that private individuals are not so limited, I personally did a journey that took over 14h (including two breaks for meals) a week ago last Monday driving a goods vehicle that I own privately, to collect a large trailer from the other end of the country. No tacho needed (indeed my vehicle doesn't have one fitted as I don't use it commercially), no restrictions on hours, nothing, because it is not my job. The reasons for restrictions on lorry drivers hours are good, a small short term increase in the allowed hours for exceptional circumstances is not the end of the world either though. |

The panic buying problem was created by the government to vilify the union and take away public sympathy from the people who have a legitimate grievance.
This tactic seems to work! |

There will never be a sudden shortage of porn, but if it did happen I am sure that somewhere in the U.S. is something like The Library of Congress of Porn, which has on microfilm or disc every piece of porn every published, hidden somewhere in Washington D.C. underground underneath 100 feet of solid concrete which could not be destroyed even if Washington D.C. was nuked.

Oddly, with all that is happening in the world right now, I am pleasantly surprised to see the Supermarket shelves still full.
Is it a case that folks are having to spend so much on Fuel now, that there is no money left over to panic buy with? |
