I think I was about 10 years old when I noticed the top shelf mags were a little bit risque with titles such as Playboy, Penthouse, Men Only.
I went for a holiday in a seaside resort a few years later and there was a shop that had a top shelf full of porn mags and they left you in no doubt what kind of mags they were. By that time I was tall enough to reach up............ |

Must've been about 9 when I started really going out of my way to look at the covers of mags in the newsagents. I remember they used to give me a boner, which I had to hide with my Parker jacket. As I got older (like 12) I'd try different ways to look at them as long as possible - I'd hold a copy of Smash Hits or Record Mirror and pretend to read them while looking at Men Only, Mayfair and Razzle out of the corner of my eye. I eventually got the courage up to buy Mayfair, v18 #12, in WH Smith (when they still used to sell it) in 1983 - I was 15. I remember putting my money on the counter, red faced, ears burning and trembling! The woman on the till just looked at me like I was a total pervert. I went home, had a wank and felt so guilty I went and dumped it in the woods near by (were we used to find all our tattered old mags). Next day I went to find it again but it had gone!

Must have been about 7 or 8. Noticed the girly stuff in the stores.
They were NOT on the top shelf though. We also got the books of matches outta the cigarette machines (cost a penny) and had topless girls on them. Never really paid attention until I was 12 or so. Then I started buying them. (1973, they didn't care about age. you had the cash, they sold it to you.) |

I think the first time I saw porn was when I was about six or so. The woman who was watching me and her daughter decided to go through her son's porn collection. I remember it was a pretty tame collection of black and white shots.

Not sure, probably about 7 or 8, but I do remember when we were on holiday once my Dad made a comment to my Mum about me looking up at the top shelf.
I don't think he minded and soon after I found his magazines and I've been hooked ever since. |

I can't remember - my dad worked for a magazine distribution company and amassed a huge stash of softcore so big I could borrow mags without them being obviously missing. I remember noticing a Pl*b*y in a Smiths in Ambleside when I was about 13 because I liked the covergirls legs and arse, but mostly I made do with the stuff my dad nicked from work from about 11 to 15.

When I was about eleven, I used to go into the newsagents just to gaze up at the wonderous display of flesh on the top shelf, I used to make it a point of principle to know what was on the cover of every magazine. I had to wait untill I was fifteen though before I drummed up the courage to buy one - a rite of passage that today's youth don't have to endure!

Not always on top shelf
I don't know when porn was first confined to the top shelf, but back in the 70s it was often displayed on a carousel. I was recently reminded of this when watching a repeat of The Sweeney where Regan pops into a tobacconist and is standing next to one loaded with Whitehouse etc.
I recall buying my first mag, a M**fair at about 14, and the woman behind the counter said "I hope this isn't for you", with a hint of a smile. |
