Some commentators , mostly English think if they create enough angst towards Australia
over the sledging issue England will draw in Perth - a ground they last avoided defeat sometime last century Win the last 2 tests (like they did in 2010) and retain the ashes 2-2 What i'd really like to see is the truth gets reported Bairstow headbutted Bancroft and some unsavoury sledge was sent back in return in either Brisbane or Adelaide. Both were stupid actions you'd expect from teens not grown men aged around 25 Seems to me what these rich spoilt kids need is to have the threat of on the field conversations being recorded and facing the consequences later not trial by media based on rumours heard about. The Indians outed the Australians for sledging wayback in the Tendulkar Dravid days. I do think the modern era with so much money at stake has made it more business than sport so the bad sledging is there no doubt. Who could forget the ultimate sledge when Glen McGrath copped it about his wife who had breast cancer. Theres either a line thats enforced or its open slather You cant have both It all starts by being man enough to be a dobber / whistle blower Anyone who used Bairstows fathers suicide as a sledge should be called out and named and shamed imho. If thats after the tour then do it to clean up the sport. The one thing bullys hate and thats being exposed |

Q: What happens when a Lion gets allowed off his leash ?
A: He gets dropped from a forthcoming game following an incident at a bar. The Lion is Ben Duckett. You really could not make this up. |

If we could play cricket as well as downing, or not in this case, the beer in Australia we might be keeping the Ashes.

As for sledging, just a couple of personal favourites.
Marsh : "So how's your wife and my kid's?". Botham: "Wife's fine. Kid's are retarded". Healey, when the baggy greens were having trouble with Ranatunga. "Put a Mars Bar on a good length and that should do it!". Mark Waugh & James Ormond. "What are you doing out here? You're too shit to play for England!" Ormond replied: "Maybe so, but at least I'm the best player in my family". |

England are continually pointing the finger at Australia over sledging, except the only thing we have really heard is innuendo coming from Bob Willis and Matt Prior and they aren't connected to the touring party.
There was some Australian comments (can't really call what we heard said sledges) in the 1st test about Bairstow's head-butt greeting but Prior and Willis have been insinuating deeper, more personal comments. Of course the Aussies talked up a head-tap to a head-butt. Bancroft said the head-butt greeting was weird but not malicious. Smith laughed heartily at Bancroft's humorous description, particularly Bancroft self-description of having the heaviest head in the WA team. Supposedly this laughing upset Root and he said it would be motivation for them going into Adelaide. Bairstow himself has said he thought he was stitched up over the headbutt sledge, and that also there was other things said in Brisbane that will stay in the middle unless they are repeated. He said he did not lose any friends from the Australian side over it and that Adelaide was played in good spirit, tough but fair, with verbals from both sides, but nothing crossing the line. If there were any nasty comments about Bairstow's dad David said in Brisbane, then Jonny has handled himself with aplomb, as I think he would have been entitled to chase and whack anyone with the bat who would say that. Anderson claimed the Aussies are "bullies" when they get on top, but when he had his purple patch in Adelaide you could see him on camera mouthing off to the Aussie batsmen, Steve Smith in particular. Nothing hypocritical to see here. At this point, given what Bairstow said and how he acted on the field, I don't think any of the rumoured nasty comments about David Bairstow were said, but if it comes out that that they were, then those guilty should be harshly punished. Also, if they had, I'd expect that England would have already tried to use that to destabilise the Aussies. My advice to England would be to stop the focus on the conspiracy theories, read the riot act to their players and get on with the game of cricket. If they need to get motivation from Smith laughing to get up for Test cricket, they're in the wrong caper. In the last little while, the ECB fined Bairstow, Ball and Plunkett for staying out late on the same night as Hales and Stokes got themselves in bother (but seemingly unconnected events). Clean up your own house. My advice to Aus is to keep playing cricket and don't cross any lines. Last edited by bp666; December 12th, 2017 at 09:54 AM.. Reason: Clear up confusion |

One thing further, I forgot to cover the Duckett incident in my last post. Why would he pour a drink over the head of Anderson. Could the English sledger-in-chief be sledging his own team now? As Bancroft would say, weird. No explanation from the ECB as to what went on and what was said. Maybe nothing, could just be some hi-jinks going a bit far with the help of alcohol.
A story in NZ this morning, here, suggesting Duckett was a scapegoat and wasn't the only one pouring drinks on the heads of teammates in Perth. Totally uncorroborated of course, perhaps Willis and Prior can shed some light on this one. Advice for England: stop drinking! (to excess) Will Dave Warner mention this incident in vicinity of the stump microphone in Perth Test? |
