I contracted one of those crappy trojan fraudpacks that sends the security on windows alerts through the roof! A friend suggested using Malwarebytes. It was easy to download (from a noninfected computer) and was executed in Windows safe mode, scanned the computer, removed all of the viruses and other threats, and now everything runs faster.

for Avast! (free version). It's very unobtrusive, efficient, updates frequently (and quickly) and you can scan downloaded files before opening them.

For Windows PCs, AVG and MalwareBytes are good and have free versions. But the very best protection is probably PC Tools' Spyware Doctor with Anti-virus, though it comes at a cost. It gives real-time protection (multi-configurable between performance and stringency) and allows quick, complete or customised scans in addition. I just add Windows Firewall to complete the protection.

Many thanks to all of you who've contributed to this useful thread!

After enduring perpetual slowdowns, boatloads of "Firefox is not responding" messages, and far too much generalized screwing up by my aging PC for what seems like forever, I tried running a whole PC scan using Microsoft Security Essentials. What a total waste of time and effort.

But after reviewing this thread, I downloaded MalwareBytes (the free version) and ran a complete scan of my computer with it. It came up with, and removed, 20+ infected items!!!

I did this very recently, and I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. But it looks like I may have actually turned the corner on my problems.

At the very least, I'm no longer actively considering taking the damn machine up to the roof and pitching it off!

Malwarebytes is an excellent program.The free version though only scans on demand so you need a "real time" antimalware program too.I use Avast on the advice of the guy who built my computer; before that I used Webroot which was effective but was a bit of a resource hog.
My suggestion is have Avast on all the time and scan say weekly - preferably in safe mode particularly if you feel the computer may be infected- with Malwarebytes.Update it just before you scan.

I've always found this online virus scanner to be excellent for peace of mind
after the likes scan/removal software like Malwarebytes,Super-Antispyware & Spybot,
anti-virus MSE & HIPS Threatfire say i'm clean

The little program rkill is a good one to have in the arsenal if your spyware removers are nobbled or you think you might have an infection

It simply stops them working and then you run your software
If it removes nothing then you know your clean and the issue is something other than an infection

What Buttsie has said is excellent, though I'd swap out MSE for Avast!

One glaring omission in a lot of posts is a good free firewall. Bog standard MS firewall is OK at best, but is only a one-way firewall (incoming). Zone Alarm's standalone firewall is a very good two-way firewall (incoming and outgoing).

Best piece of advice I can give is lay down some money and buy yourself the best protection suite according to professional reviews (like PCPro). Something like Norton Internet Security. Good paid for protection suites have a much higher catch rate and protection than anyway freeware combo, but no software has a 100% catch rate.
