What an interesting thread topic. I've got a ton of porn DVDs and even some old VHS tapes that I can't bring myself to part with(at least until I can find the titles on DVD). Fortunately, my friends know what an unrepentant porn hound I am. I will probably just divvy up my stash among my pals. Of course, that might piss off some of their wives, but hey, that's half the fun.

It looks like you want: http://www.truecrypt.org/

Use, e.g. http://www.leemon.com/crypto/MakePass.html to generate a safe pass-phrase.

Memorize these 12 words/4 nonsense words/whatever you chose; as soon as you kick the bucket, the data will be unusable. Encryption & throwing away the key is the industry standard of destroying data.

Move any data you want to hide to a hidden & encrypted partition. Copy the content of the CDs to this partition and microwave them for 10 seconds.

Then you can sleep better.

P.S. Keep encrypted backups, too.

for work I used to use the old pgp encryption that usually is enough for anyone. I found to hide the suffix, the bit that tells people what type of file it it is best to zip the directory then encrypted. this would save people wondering why you have millions of images, especially if they are called 'big dong gang bang 8' or something subtle. You could rename it to 'the beach at dawn', but you'd never be able to find anything unless you kept a record, which would miss the point of the subterfuge.

if you do do this zip/encrypt be sure to erase the original and destroy the the temporary files.

to my mind there is no need to be this paranoid. There are two things to bear in mind here: most people are not computer experts; unless we pop our clogs very soon after we get new hardware no one is going to take too much time on our computers.

to this end I would suggest having different user accounts on any computer for anyone else who users -- wives/girlfriends/mother, if they can use the machine for their purposes OK they'll not be bothered to pry into your stuff too much.

have a very strong password on your account. Such a strong password can be cracked, but no one is going to take the time and effort to do so.

finally you can use online backup for any files you want to keep secret. The password of this service not being written down anywhere, nor bookmark the service so there is no trace on your computer (you'll have to erase your internet history after each time you use the site so you leave no trace, together with any emails about it). So even if the backup up is found there will not be able to open it

in most cases it is not worth the time, effort, of cost to do anything complicated to crack the password, at most they'll reload the operating system which will wipe anything on it anyway.

at a pinch you could store all your files on a flash drive and carry it around with you (I so, but it is not porn), or hide. Then you have the secrecy of having a physical hiding place, one with its own password, or encryption if needed.

you have to balance embarrassment against the ability to get access to the files...the choice is up to each individual

Default good topic

very interesting opinion's from others

i too have thought of this; having a wife and a young daughter. what a scene it would be for some of my "private" taste to become known. i compare online porn to the fantasies you have in your head while masturbating. there are no limits, no inhibitions. big problem is the internet has put alot of these "taste" into real time almost like others can read your mind by looking at your computer. i've been saying for years now that i'd rather have my wallet, car almost anything else stolen verus my pc. a pc is extremely private.
my opinion on the actual topic that thread starter brought up is this; first you have no control once your gone....with no control you lose any embarrasement or feelings towards it...you cease. secondly; those who you really do care about their feelings would probably respect your privacy to a point. we all practice it daily be it not going through your wife's cell phone call log or going through her browsing history. maybe you do...but i'd wager in those cases that there are other issues or underlying problems. i think your loved ones would respect your privacy out of pure respect and maybe subconsciously to protect the image they have of you. maybe your children would snoop or dig but in the end i think that would only make you more human and less parent in their eyes.
in the end; to the older gentleman i'd offer up that should the bell toll for you before said porn stash is deleted or purged and your loved one does come upon it. even 500gb of the most extreme porn does not wash away the life you shared. we all have skeletons....we're all human. for guys most of our skeletons involve sex.

I no longer have any porn mags or vids. Everything is either on DVD-Rs or the PC. A while ago I had a near death accident, after which I decided to encrypt everything, just to save anyone potential embarrassment of finding a load of filth in the event of my snuffing it

This subject was covered in an early episode of the UK tv comedy series "Coupling".

What you need is a "porn buddy". Somebody you trust totally, who you give your key to, who will go to your home and remove all your porn in the event of your death.

Having heard the explanation the female character, Susan, seems amazed that this pact had been made to destroy all her prospective boyfriends porn, to which the guy replied...

"Destroy??? I said remove. Your best friend's dead, but there's an upside, you've got all his porn!"

The obvious flaw with this arrangement is that if you ever have a falling out with your porn buddy, he might nick your collection

This thread reminds me of a Bill Hicks stand-up routine: "One of my big fears in life is that I'm gonna die and my parents are going to come to clean out my apartment and find that porno wing I've been adding on to for years..." Funny stuff. He is dead now, sadly. Don't know what happened to his stash.
