A 21st century true to life horror story set in Northern England. I bet those Tory wankers - IDS, Cameron, Gideon et al - pissed themselves laughing.

Turkish film about five sisters growing-up in a remote village. Multiple awards and nominations, well worth watching. On Amazon Prime in the UK.

DUNKIRK

Overwhelmed by German troops Allied soldiers on the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk are being evacuated and their only way out is the English channel and while this evacuation is going on they must avoid airstrikes and torpedoes

Director and writer Christopher Nolan splits his film into three parts that switch in and out
throughout the film:The Mole,The Sea,and The Air.
The film grabbed me from the start and didnt let me catch my breath.
Scenes were filmed in such a way that made me feel i was on the beach,or boat the Allied soldiers were on.
The sound in this film is incredible, the futility of being in certain life and death situations
was right in my face. This was all coupled with a soul stirring score by Hans Zimmer.
The fear and mistrust is brilliantly displayed

All of that being said sometimes the sound of what people were actually saying at times was unintelligible.
There was a lack of character development with the exception of Mark Rylance as Mr Dawson, a mariner who attempts to help some of the the soldiers to safety, and Tom Glynn-Carney as Peter, his son.

This is a film that deserves to be seen on the big screen,do your best to see it in IMAX and 70MM.

Scale of 1-10 an 8˝

Girls Trip

The trailers for this movie did not appeal to me ,i actually found them to be kind of obnoxious but word of mouth and the fact that the movie was in the capable hands of Malcolm D. Lee (Hey Malcolm im still waiting for The Best Man's Wedding !!)got me to buy a ticket.

Oprah like business woman Ryan Pierce(Regina Hall) is asked to be the keynote speaker at the annual Essence Music Festival. So she decides to bring her best friends along which include Queen Latifah as Sasha Franklin
Jada Pinkett Smith as Lisa Cooper and Tiffany Haddish as Dina

I laughed out loud several times during the movie.Haddish basically steals the movie as she was allowed to ad lib quite a bit.Not that the other actresses werent fun to watch, because they were and they all blended well together. It really felt like they were friends for years.
If you are not into sexual humor,or humor that involves bodily functions, you should sit this one out !!

Some turns in the movie were mega predictable and at times i felt like i was watching a promotional video for the Essence Music Festival.

Still its one of the better and well produced women behaving badly comedies out there.

Scale of 1-10 a 7˝

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Space agents Major Valerian and Sergeant Laureline must retrieve a rare space animal that harvest special, energy-containing pearls from the planet and use certain animals to duplicate objects.
Someone is out to destroy the animals and some fun and adventure ensues

I really have to applaud Director and writer Luc Besson and everyone involved in creating the creatures, aliens, and worlds that inhabit this film.
The entire movie looks flawless. It was fun to behold this world
Now i know some are saying Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne didnt fit into their roles and sure it doesnt always work and the script was clunky here and there but it wasnt terrible.

I also thought Rihanna as Bubble, a shapeshifting entertainer was pretty charming and absolutely beautiful.
I think the film side tracks itself a few times and loses some steam when i was being shown all of these wonderful things but wondered when the ultimate goal of the movie would be found again.
Definitely worth checking out on DVD

The Dyatlov Pass Incident (2013)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1905040/

A team of students decide to make a documentary about the Dyatlov Pass incident in 1959 where a group of 9 skiers went missing after apparently fleeing from their tents in terror, their bodies were found a while after but although they died from hypothermia several suffered unexplained injuries .

A few good points
Great scenery - filmed in Russia
Based on real events
Loads of conspiracy theories
Nice mix of documentary style & normal filming
Strange things moving in the snow just out of sight of the team
Gemma Atkinson

Food of the Gods II (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097371/

An experiment to try to help mankind by perfecting growth hormones goes wrong. Throw in a giant child and an animal rights group breaking into the labs and rival scientists pushing on with separate research projects.
Then a bunch of lab rats get loose after the protesters break into the lab and they find the rats have developed serious anti-social attitudes and as the hormone kicks in they soon get to the size of a small horse :O

I watched Zero Days (2016) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5446858/ a documentary on the Stuxnet virus that the US and Israel unleashed on Iran's nuclear program. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Olympic_Games I am guessing it is more accurate than not. Since I am not a believer that Iran has curtailed its nuclear program, I don't agree with everything it says, but it is well worth the time to watch and see how a new weapon was used and eventually turned against its creators.

It is a new world we live in.

Touchez pas au grisbi (1954)

Trailer

Aging gentleman gangster Max (Jean Gabin) plans to retire after a successful heist, stealing eight bars of gold. He's having dinner with his old friend Riton (René Dary) and other associates at Madame Bouche's restaurant in Paris. They go to the Pierrot's nightclub where their girlfriends perform but Max catches Riton's girlfriend Josy (Jeanne Moreau) making out with Angelo (Lino Ventura), a gangster himself. On his way home, Max is followed by Angelo's men. Obvsiously they're after the stolen gold.

A great classic by Jacques Becker whose last film Le Trou is one of the greatest French crime films ever. If you like movies with substance and personality, watch classics like these.

Logan

I'm not really much of a fan of comic books, but you can't avoid the movies can you? And this really was a superior sort of movie.

It's absorbing, touching, and almost existentially sad. So many superheroes are either tediously good and never develop (Superman, Capt America), or they're so damn cynical and weary already (Ironman, Batman), so it's fairly surprising to have superheroes who actually have a character arc. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart certainly have that in this movie, a couple of fantastic performances.

And the direction and music are great too, and almost as important, the action scenes aren't just CGI'ed to bollocks.

Very impressed.
