The Tall Man (2012)
Wow...
Hard to talk about this one without spoilers...
Biel is really damn good here, can't wait to start watching her new series The Sinner which looks to be a showcase on her acting.
End of the film ask a lot of uncomfortable no easy answer questions about societies apathy & parental treatment of children (Gone Baby Gone raised similar queries)
There is a single moment where the film seems to stop & preach to you but it doesn't beat you over the head with it. (a character literally says "if your done...")
I have not seen & have no intention of ever seeing Martyrs (torture porn is not my thing) but Laugier's direction here is really damn good, There is a LOT of misdirection & red herrings but it all flows extremely well.
The X-Files actors Stephen Mchattie & William B.Davis are wasted, it's Biel's show the whole way.
Recommended!

Default So they made a remake

Once a mild-mannered liberal, New York City architect Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) snaps when intruders break into his home, murdering his wife (Hope Lange) and violently raping his daughter. A business trip to Tucson, Ariz., lands him a gift from a client, a revolver he uses to patrol the streets when he returns home. Frustrated that the police cannot find the intruders, he become a vigilante, gunning down any criminal that crosses his path. The public finds this vigilantism heroic.

Lightbulb Seriously I`d recommend watching Schindler's List in 3D rather than bleeding Brimstone !

Is a roller coaster of a thriller

So imagine the shock to my system when I then went from that to this

Now I`m not saying it isn't completely atmospheric or well acted by all.

However what I am saying is it`s unrelenting bleak throughout with an ending that`s even worse than the two hours twenty four minutes that came before it

Default 3 1/2 minutes , Ten Bullets

In 3 1/2 Minutes, Ten Bullets, two lives intersected and were forever altered. On Black Friday 2012, two cars parked next to each other at a Florida gas station. A white middle-aged male and a black teenager exchanged angry words over the volume of the music in the boy's car. A gun entered the exchange, and one of them was left dead. Michael Dunn fired 10 bullets at a car full of unarmed teenagers and then fled. Three of those bullets hit 17-year-old Jordan Davis, who died at the scene. Arrested the next day, Dunn claimed he shot in self-defense. Thus began the long journey of unraveling the truth.

I have just watched the Documentary , and I have to say ( as a British Guy ) that American Gun Laws are ' lets say , unreal to me - that you can buy a gun as easily as a pair of sun-glasses --
I realise you have that right under the Constitution ' to bear arms ' but ' Bowling for Columbine ' exposed the gun mentality for me - in spades .......
I recommend this to anyone

Cruising (1980)

Trailer

In New York City during a hot summer, a serial killer is on the loose and his victims are homosexual men who frequent the S&M bars in West Village. Officer Steve Burns (Al Pacino), whose appearance resembles most of the victims, is asked by Captain Edelson (Paul Sorvino) to work undercover in the S&M scene where he's supposed to track down the killer. Burns accepts as the job looks like a major career move. He rents an apartment in the area and befriends a struggling gay playwright who is his neighbor. As Burns gets deeper into the scene, the job takes a toll on his relationship with his girlfriend Nancy (Karen Allen) and his own mental state.

Not my first viewing and the reason why I wanted to watch it again is James Ellroy's novel The Big Nowhere which I finished reading a few weeks ago. Ellroy told a reporter once that he drew some inspiration from "a bad William Friedkin movie", a reference to Cruising obviously. One of the protagonists in the book is a young homicide detective called Danny Upshaw who's working on a number of "homo snuffs" in Los Angeles in early 1950. Just like Steve Burns in Friedkin's movie, Upshaw is consumed by his investigation and forced to confront his own sexuality, although it's not that obvious in the case of Burns.

Cruising is an interesting dark thriller but suffers from poor directing and a number of wrong cast choices. Al Pacino, being the great actor he obviously is, was definitely miscast here. And not to mention the very bad ending.

Affluent and arrogant businessman Goddard Bolt (Mel Brooks), feuding with rival Vance Crasswell (Jeffrey Tambor) over a land deal, makes a bet with Crasswell that he has the wits and street smarts to live penniless and anonymous on the rough streets of Los Angeles for 30 days. But Bolt has a rude awakening when the reality of homelessness hits him. Still, he finds a silver lining in a burgeoning romance with Molly (Lesley Ann Warren), a former Broadway dancer who has fallen on hard times.

Enjoyable romp, Reynolds as bodyguard, Jackson as the hitman(swears a bit).
