~ Colonel Birger Eriksen, Commanding Officer of the Oscarborg Coastal Fortress on the north side of the entrance to Oslofjord: 0421 hours 9th April 1940.

Without any prior warning and with no orders (except that he was supposed to fire a warning shot first), Colonel Eriksen found himself in the graveyard watch confronted by the spectacle of a flotilla of unknown warships, including two heavy cruisers, sailing straight past his guns. Who the hell were they? What were they up to? No one had told Colonel Eriksen that the war had come to Norway and he had to make up his mind instantly what he should do. He waited until the range was under 2,000 metres and then he started shooting, and no pissing about with a warning shot neither.

He sank KMS Blucher and severely damaged KMS Lutzow and scored hits on a number of their escorts before the Kriegsmarine retreated, their surprise attack baffled and mauled by a garrison of reservists who had never in their lives fired a shot in anger before, led by a 64 year old man only weeks away from retirement. On board KMS Blucher were over 600 soldiers tasked to capture the port of Oslo and 40 Gestapo men specially tasked to capture the King of Norway. Not one of the Gestapo men survived the sinking and most of the soldiers also went down with the ship. At no stage until after the shooting stopped did anyone tell Colonel Eriksen what it was all about. He was forced from beginning to end to act on his own initiative.

It is not really hard to shoot guns. It is more difficult to make the decision to fire.
