Paterno from HBO.
Al Pacino plays the late PSU football coach, whose rivaled string of wins and enormous legacy came crashing down following the Jerry Sandusky scandal. I love biographical movies, and hammy Pacino never fails to deliver. I give it a B- even though much of it was inaccurate, and I'm sure that the folks in University Park would agree.

I watched Before I Fall (2017) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Before_I_Fall_(film) - cuz I had insomnia and it was on cable. A teen girl movie about a popular girl who relives one day over and over again - but not in a funny way like Groundhog Day (1993). Shallow girl who supposedly has a big heart. Ending was rather abrupt and not what I was expecting. Film got mixed reviews and didn't do that well at the box office. I give it 2 of 5. No nudity. I don't really see what the producers expected from the story. It certainly was not a feel good movie that would draw people back again.

Killer Pre-Title sequence ! Went to see it with some friends last night and I can safely say now that it will likely end up on my top 10 horror movies of 2018. Who would have known John 'Jim' Krasinski could pull that off ? The main reason this works is the flawless characterization so when shit starts hitting the fan, you actually care, something most genre directors tend to forget. I haven't been on edge like I was in the last half of this movie in the theater for a long time. After Jordan Peele with 'Get Out' last year, I don't know what it is lately with people known for comedy, fuckin' killing it in the horror genre but thats promising. 9/10

The Beast Within (1982)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083629/ I saw this underrated horror gem at the cinema when it first came out A woman is raped by a strange beast on her wedding night, she becomes pregnant as a result. 17 years later and the child that resulted is dying and they are advised that a rare genetic condition is affecting his pituitary gland, his parents go back to the site of the attack (Noba) to see if they can trackdown the attacker and hopefully find a way to cure their child https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPsbf3cAB8s

Have long thought about whether I should post this here. Well, what the hell.
Yi ge dou bu neng shao (China, 1999) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209189/ The trailer should not be taken too literally. Yimou Zhang realized this movie exclusively with amateur actors, who actually only play themselves. The village school teacher is really a village school teacher, the mayor is really a mayor, the poor peasant girl is really a peasant girl etc. You get the idea. The film tells the simle story of a very young 'substitute teacher' who, in the midst of rural China's poverty, is doing evereything in her might to keep her little students together. A small gem to watch and learn. With a happy ending. |
