Gentlemen
To theequestrian and tygrkhat40,
You guys are tops in my book. I appreciate and respect anyone who can hold a disputed conversation and still come out shaking hands. I have run into too many who insist that their's is the only opinion which counts and who often refuse to listen to any other point of view. Those people have no credibility to me because their's is not an informed opinion. I would love to buy both of you dinner sometimes, but, this forum being what it is, we all know that will never happen. However, the next time I am out, I will tip one in respect for you both. Thank you gentlemen.

Have the americans ever used the phrase "happy christmas" instead of "happy holidays" ?
If so, why and when was this changed ? |

I don't think so. "Merry Christmas" is the standard American phrase - never "Happy Christmas". Though I'd guess it's not that old a custom. The tree and all of that was borrowed from the Germans; it's essentially a Victorian custom.
The Puritans strongly disapproved of Christmas merry-making. |

Sorry about that, just something I feel very strongly about! Um, I enjoyed going to Magic Mountain when I was in So Cal, some of the best amusement park rides in the world there. Have fun!! |

The first time I ever heard anyone say "Happy Christmas" was in one of the Harry Potter movies. And when I heard it I thought it sounded so odd. I did not think anyone actually said that except in the alternate world of Harry Potter.

The German for "Merry Christmas" is "Froelichte Weinachten" so it's not an exact translation. It's always seemed to me that "froelichte" is related to the Enlish word "frolick." But, I'm not a linguist. |

I say "Happy Christmas" every now and then but I'm a little strange and probably the only one who does it. Most Americans just go with "Merry Christmas". The Television media will always say "Happy Holidays" and sometimes throw a "happy Kwanza" in there for the other religions in order to be politically correct and not insult others.

Stupid is, stupid does.
Just when you think that Ol' Dubya is one of the most ill-informed, uneducated, dim person's ever created (He didn't even know that the two main creeds of Islam are Sunni and Shia. He just thought that it is one mass..) Along comes a grade-A- F**kwit who wants to burn a Koran.. Genius. that's what a world needs right now, a clash of civlisations.
Speaking as a Limey and proud of it too, I happen to think that the Brit's can be the dumbest of all, then comes someone who disproves that theory. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11223457 |
