OUI was a great publication IMO; lots of favorite models from their first couple of years. The European thing did it for me when I came across a stash of these a while ago.

I think hugh hefner knew that he had to enter the non-discreet side like the P#$%house did,he just waited too late to push it.The girl next door in P#$layboy is now more open and free like the other.I believe they need to keep pushing the women so P#@#layboy stays around and flourishes again.

The ideal Penthouse Pet would be the foxy nicely built girl that wasn't quite robust or buxom enough for Playboy.

The first Playmate of the Month to pose for Penthouse was Ursula Buchfellner in 1984. It was tame Playboy level. No spread shots. Later Teri Weigel did around the time she started doing porn. She showed more but it was still a little mild for Penthouse at the time and especially so for someone doing porn.

EDIT: I stand corrected. Deanna Baker was in Penthouse before Ursula Buchfellner but she used the name Rebecca Davenport and it was in 1977. She wasn't a Pet of the Month. Apparently just a feature pictorial but it was Penthouse style. Inner labia visible.

Lynn Thomas was the first Playmate of the Month to also be a Pet of the Month. Victoria Zdrok and Lexi Karlsen later also did it. I kind of doubt it will happen again. I don't think that they have the money to pay models the way Playmates would want to be paid to pose for them. It's rumored that Heather Carolin was in talks to be in Penthouse around the time she started doing spread shots but they couldn't agree on the money.

A few Playboy models who weren't Playmates of the Month also posed for Penthouse. Heidi Staley who was in a bunch of newsstand specials became a Pet of the Month under the name Heidi Lynne. Oddly, Patricia Ford, another popular PB newsstand model posed for Suze Randal doing several pictorials with full spread shots but was never in Penthouse. Those pictorials did show up in a few other mags like Club and High Society.

Quite a few Penthouse Pets have posed for feature pictorials or newsstand specials but none has gone on to be a Playmate of the Month. Playboy would never allow something like that. Julie Strain and Tera Patrick come to mind but I know there were others.

Smile Playboy vs. Penthouse in the 1970s

Photography buffs call it "soft focus", but I always called it "out of focus" There were certain times I liked that effect, but more often I preferred the sharpness of PB photos.
Here's another example from the 1970s of the sharp, "in-focus" Playboy style of photography and the more "soft-focus" approach of Penthouse: Liv Lindeland vs. Vicki Lynn Johnson.

They are both gorgeous, but the Playboy approach creates a kind of surface realism with nothing behind it, except at the eyes and in the woman's smile, if she's a good actress; whereas the Penthouse photo creates an aura of surface mystery around the woman's body, which also only exists at the surface. In neither case is there anything to connect to inside these images, no person there to whom we can relate--but hey, this is just porn. What did you want, the "Mona Lisa"?

No...but I DO want a clear pic of the body parts I'm looking at...leave the alluring stuff to the model's clothing, pose, and facial expression.

Patti McGuire had one of the best "come hither" looks...but for me the effect would be ruined if I couldn't clearly see the body I was fantasizing about "coming hither" to in the first place.

PH photography was shit and their models started looking skanky in the early-mid 90s. PB's were gorgeous (so were some PH Pets) but also started looking the same (to me) in the late 80s-early 90s.

I don't mind pussy shots or even explicit asscrack ones (Femjoy is great for this) if the model turns me on, looks like a real girl/woman, not a fleshbot, no tats or rat's nest hair etc. To tell the truth I prefer the Mayfair pictures here on VEF to both PB and PH.

Playboy had more sweet girl-next-door/ swimsuit model types while Penthouse had more slutty beauties.

Penthouse WINS!

I think the photography in Penthouse was much more artistic with it's hard contrast and soft focus. The high class whore thing was pretty hot along with the fur coats, costume jewelry, champagne glasses, and silver waist chains. I just wish Guccione would have had one romantically lit hardcore sex spread in 70s and 80s within each magazine.

As far as the models - I think Penthouse had models that were more interesting. They were less on the cookie cutter side.
