pizza in america has become an obscene joke of the lowest order...
20-30 years ago there were some decent pizza joints scattered around the country... now, fogedaboutit, it ain't happening no more, you are as likely to find a condom a cigarette butt or someones finger in your pizza as any edible toppings... the one place you could count on for decent pizza has gone the way of the dodo... shakey's was a good pizza chain, they have been gone since the late 80's afaik...

The pizza I grew up on was from Italian or Greek restaurants and it was great. In the past ten years they have been sold or closed, since their kids don't want to work long hours. Now pizza in Montreal is mainly the 2 for 1 crap made by Arabs(?!). There are still a few good ones left, my favourite being Angela's. They make a pizza "Angela's Special that is loaded - sauce, pepperoni, green peppers, mushrooms, bacon, onions and cheese that would spoil Estreeter ! I live 2 blocks from an Italian bakery that makes fantastic bread as well as "cold pizza".
Pizza Hut never really caught on in Montreal, or any of the other pizza chains.

and that is an insult to toast...
seriously, there is no good pizza left, well, wait, maybe there is one place left on the planet... http://www.monstrospizza.com/index.html i went there with a friend a long time ago, the pizzas were huge, completely hand made, the toppings and cheese were real... they are still in business after all these years, the owner created the business from nothing... it was the best pizza i had had in ages... dammit, that is hours away from here, it might almost be worth the trip...v

Chicago style pizza, aka deep dish, is a true pizza pie. True, the crust is thicker than a New York style, but that's so the filling stays on. You can eat deep dish with your hands, but it's easier with a fork. When I was best man for a friend many moons ago, the wedding was in Chicago. The rehersal dinner was at a local pizza house and we had deep dish. I had one slice of the two kinds of pizza and was full.

I prefer pizza tuna or hawaiian and I usually go to my favorite italian restaurant in my home town in Germany. My pizza baker originally is from sicilia and you can see when he prepares the paste and all the other fresh ingredients. He told me that he only uses a very special flour and he always takes it from a certain flour mill. In additian to that the pizza is done in a brick oven so in my opinion he has got the best pizza far and wide.
A “deep-frozen pizza” from a discounter or some other stuff from “home delivery services” is nothing against it and normally no alternative at all – just in case my pizzaria is closed or if I have no time to go there. |

In the town I used to live in there was a very good BBQ joint run by this black family. EVERY time I saw that episode of MASH I had to go get a rack of those ribs. Every time! Moved away from there long ago but go back once in a while. Sadly, the BBQ place is now gone. And where I live now there is no really good BBQ. Acceptable BBQ? Yes. But nothing really good. Same for pizza. |
