Quotation from: Anthony J. D΄Angelo, The College Blue Book

The people who oppose your ideas the most are those who represent the establishment that your ideas will upset.

Quotation from: Mark Twain
US humorist, novelist, short story author, & wit (1835 - 1910)

A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining, but wants it back the minute it begins to rain.

Quotation from: Ralph Waldo Emerson
US essayist & poet (1803 - 1882)

By necessity, by proclivity, and by delight, we all quote. In fact, it is as difficult to appropriate the thoughts of others as it is to invent.

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

Default J'Accuse...!

January 13, 1898:Headline by Georges Clemenceau, editor of L'Aurore, to an incendiary open letter to the Prime Minister of the French Republic, Felix Faure, written by Emile Zola.
This is one of the great stories of France, probably the greatest piece of journalism ever. France would tear itself apart, it set against each other two great forces.

On the side of Darkness~
Ferdinand Esterhazy, traitor
The government of the Third Republic
The General Staff of the French Army,
Major Paty de Clam and Major Henry,
and three handwriting experts, Messrs. Belhomme, Varinard, and Couard, accused by Zola of submitting false reports at the trial of Alfred Dreyfus.

On the side of Light~
Alfred Dreyfus, an innocent man convicted of treason and sentenced to a life of solitary confinement and torture on Devil's Island,
Lucie Dreyfus, the loyal wife of Alfred, who wrote many letters of comfort to him during his exile. She had also written to the Vatican for mercy, but her letter was never answered.
Dreyfus's brother Mathieu, who fought a lonely campaign for several years;
Jewish journalist and anarchist Bernard Lazare, who first used the word J'accuse in L’Eclair
Lt.Colonel Marie-Georges Picquart, of French Military Counter-intelligence, who by incredible coincidence and perception found out that Esterhazy was the traitor, then was straight away transferred to Tunisia;
the Alsatian vice-president of the French Senate, Auguste Scheurer-Kestner;
two giants of French literature, Emile Zola and Marcel Proust, author of À la recherche du temps perdu (Remembrance of Things Past)
Georges Clemenceau, editor and later twice Prime Minister of France.

Zola was tried for libel and found guilty, appealed, again found guilty, fled to England. He returned to France for Dreyfus' retrial. I believe he paid for all this with his life.

In the face of a mounting scandal, including an admission by Esterhazy, Dreyfus was brought back for retrial in 1899. He was again found guilty, but the story doesn't end there.

In the vein of famous misjudgements:

''We don't like their sound. Groups with guitars are on the way out.'' Decca Records, turning down the Beatles in January 1961. In fairness the demo tapes reflect a poor audition by the Fab Four, who were still very raw and nervous as well, but even so...

''Why are you boys taking cover? They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist...'' Last words of Brigadier General John Sedgwick, Union Army, Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, 1864.

Or the wise words uttered by a RKO report on Fred Astaire

According to Hollywood folklore, a screen test report on Astaire for RKO Pictures, now lost along with the test, is reported to have read: "Can't sing. Can't act. Balding. Can dance a little."
