A question for my British friends
After years of doing things and taking holidays for other people, going places I didn't want to go to, After my divorce in 2004 I decided to start doing things for me for a change...
A few years ago I took a trip to Alaska for salmon fishing, spent the following summer in Idaho... And this year I spent a month exploring Australia. I'm now in the planning stages for next spring and summer and I'd like to take a trip to the UK... Here's some of my interests... I'm sort of a WWII history buff and I'd like to tour the Imperial War Museum and I understand there's a pretty good Tank Museum on the Isle of Wight... And I would like to see if there's any day trips to Normandy and the D-Day beaches... I'm also a beer connoisseur and really enjoy exploring local pubs (and I have a feeling this trip might turn into one big pub crawl every night!) and the pub scene (not nightclubs or discos) in general. As for getting around I've already decided to get a month-long BritRail pass for the entire country so I can just hop on and off the train anywhere I might like to see, instead of hiring a car. Any suggestions/advice?

Are they part of the Imperial War Museum or separate?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_A..._Museum_London The IWM has a big aircraft collection as well at Duxford in Cambridgeshire- it also includes their American aircraft collection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperia...Museum_Duxford If you're into warbirds, and you're planning to travel, they're both worth visiting |

You might like to try Eden Camp just outside York on the way to Malton, its a reasonable mock up of a prisoner of war camp, where you can experience what was like in an air raid shelter in the Blitz.
There is also an air museum at Elvington just ten minutes out of York city centre. Then you can steep yourself on 2000 years of British history in one of Englands prettiest cities, with its many many fine pubs.

Why not try the Churchill War rooms in Whitehall. Then a trip into town and a visit Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese. A really old pub with good beer and food.

Seconded the IWM at Duxford, I was driving past last year and they had a Catalina flying boat doing loops over the M11.
Seconded the Elvington Museum at York. The tower has been kept as was in WW2 and they have several warbirds being restored including a Dehavilland Mosquito and a Handley Page Halifax bomber. This is a taxi or bus ride outside of York city but woth it. York itself is an original castelated City and is the pride of the North of England. It can rival London and Edinburgh on a good day. York is the home of the National Railway Museum (free) and has many terrific pubs. |

You simply can't do Normandy in a day trip, unfortunately. The crossing Portsmouth-Caen is a long one and if you go Dover-Calais it's a long drive.
I'd put in a shout for the National Army Museum in Chelsea and Firepower, the Museum of the Royal Artillery in Woolwich. But I'm biased towards both |

All the places mentioned so far are excellent and well worth visiting. Try also a trip down to Portsmouth. Apart from HMS Victory and HMS Warrior (not your period but brilliant to see) there is the Submarine Museum. They have a WW2 boat there and the tour is one of the best military tours I have ever done.
