On the subject of language and particularly the OUGH sound it reminds me of a joke my Dad told me once. An immigrant is trying to learn English in order to settle in New York so his translator sets about teaching him how to pronounce words.
"Ah, says the man I have a cow". "No, its pronounced cough(coff) says his teacher" Later he is looking at a picture of a farmer in a field-ah, he says he is using a pluff. No, corrects his teacher, it is pronounced plow(plough)" and much later he is feeling a bit row. "No, its pronounced rough(ruff) says his teacher. Weeks go by and he feels that he has gained enough knowledge on pronounciation to go for a walk in the Big Apple. As he walks down a road he spies a big poster on a wall of a famous pianist(himself once an immigrant) and gets really confused...It reads: 'LIBERACE-PRONOUNCED SUCCESS!'

OK, just for the record...
American Football is quite popular in the UK. Nothing like proper football obviously, but it has a hardcore, loyal and not insignificant fanbase. It was first televised regularly in the UK on Channel4 in the early-'80s (over 4 million people watched Superbowl XX - including me). There was a concerted effort to establish a European League in the late '90s (the UK team were the London Monarchs) which was fitfully successful for a while but ultimately floundered and collapsed. Also: The official attendance figure for the game today was 84,301 from a capacity of 90,000 (only US College Football stadia have greater capacities - incidentally less than the actual attendance of today's Chargers/Titans game). The weather was mild and wonderfully sunny all day. There are over 150,000 US citizens living in the UK, over 50,000 of whom live in London proper (not forgetting the metro region and easily commutable Home Counties). As has been mentioned above, the idea that these teams - and by teams, read colossal corporate and professional organisations backed by billion dollar concerns - just get up in the morning and get on plane and turn up with jet-lag in a foggy old London town with Beefeaters, Jack the Ripper and the Queen wandering around in the gloom is absurd. Basically, the whole thing is meticulously organised and silly little things like time-zone anomalies and weather are fully factored in. Also, it's the LA Chargers these days. Daft I know, Chargers = San Diego, obvZ. lol Hope that helps. |

Translation 'equally as incomprehensible.' Are the Irish and Australians (with the exception of New South Wales) the only people in the world who play proper football? |

"GHOTI" being pronounced "FISH" could ONLY happen if: 1) "GH" always had an "F" sound, it does not: Brought, Slough. ("GHO" is usually pronounced as the "G" in "GO" but a little softer, as in: Ghost, Ghoul.) 2) "O" always had an "I" sound, it does not: Work, Wrote. 4) "TI" always had a "SH" sound, it does not: Tide, Conducting. ("TI" only has a "SH" sound when the next letter following is either an "A" or an "O".)

I think you're missing the point - nobody is saying that each of the combination of letters you pointed out is always pronounced that way, it's just a demonstration of how confusing the English language can be to those non-native speakers.

I'm not missing the point about odd spellings in the English language, I'm pointing out that the word GHOTI cannot be pronounced FISH.
