I particularly recommend the Jorvik museum which shows the city as it was when it was capital of Eric Bloodaxe's Viking Kingdom of York (Jorvik). It's a fascinating attraction and also very popular. If you choose to see it, book in advance because then you don't have to queue to get in.

Speaking as an outsider.
York is great, I would definitely have a few days there. This is there somewhere: Six miles east is the little town of Stamford Bridge, where a great battle was fought in 1066, less than three weeks before Hastings. There is not much evidence of it these days. In other circumstances it would be remembered in the same way as Waterloo, Trafalgar and the Battle of Britain. Chester is another walled city, I'm sure you would like it if you like York. Winchester in Hampshire, the Malvern Hills and the Severn valley. In Malvern you can visit the Morgan works, where they make the sports cars. RT, as a train man you are going to love the big stations like Paddington and Waterloo. In London Greenwich is a must-see I think. You can take a ferry down from the Houses of Parliament and it's a great way to see the Thames as well. I'm pretty sure if you get a travel pass on the Underground it also covers the ferry. Harrison's clocks are there, and that is a great story. I agree about the war rooms in Whitehall. You can take the long way from Hyde Park, walk through St. James's Park, then Trafalgar Square and down Whitehall. Eating out can be expensive, I found the pubs were the best option. I'm sure there are members here that can recommend the best ones, in fact we even have a thread on this important topic. Last time I was there it was May, I couldn't get over how green it was. I don't think it's a peak tourist time either. |

I'm looking into flights to England. No point wasting time. Could be dead next week. Though a cheap flight would be nice

To the best of my knowledge, the British Isles are the only countries who drive right hand side in Europe. So my question is what's it like to drive your car in a country where everyone else is left hand drive? Or what's it like to change sides when you rent a car in another country?
I would be a danger to any and all living beings if you stuck me in a car and made me shift gears left handed and drive on the opposite side of the road. I have only ever ridden in a right hand drive car once and that was an unusual experience. We got some interesting looks from people when we'd pass them and I would be drinking and or eating at the time. Lastly, I'm curious what do the zig-zag lines painted on the roads mean? Are these the drunk driving lanes?
