So Asda was purchased by Wal Mart. That means any unions present during the sale were probably grandfathered in. That sound about right?

Are they only a supermarket? Here they're "big box stores" which means they have these huge stores which have a supermarket (pretty poor selection) and almost everything else you can imagine.
Yes,I'd say so,We do have "Big Box Stores" but Asda are a touch above Them.

Here's a picture of Spotted Dick.

I've eaten them and they are delicious.

I guess what's throwing me off is I don't understand what is a suet pudding. Is it okay to presume that this is a sweet dessert type of dish that usually comes in a can?

EDIT. I guess I should have used the search engine a little better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suet_pudding

A suet pudding is a traditional food containing suet. Many variations are strongly associated with British cuisine. Recipes vary greatly and can be desserts or savoury courses. They are typically boiled or steamed though some baked variations and recipes adapted for microwave ovens exist.
Examples include Spotted dick, Christmas pudding, Treacle pudding, Clootie, Jam Roly-Poly and many other flavour variations. Savoury versions include Steak and kidney pudding.

And this youtube video shows how it's done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GITrDR6pvpM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAzA-ZlcPs4

suet = beef or mutton drippings.

heh, not quite

Usually made for you by your Mum or Grandma or cook if you are very rich. Often served at school dinners in all grades of school from state right up to Public School ( yep in the UK a Public school is the exact opposite of the term used in the USA and means a very posh place with huge fees)

The only peeps who get it in cans are the single, and those to old to cook.

It is a suet sponge dumpling and filled with vine fruits, served hot with lots of custard (creme anglais).

And on the topic of ASDA or ASsociated DAries as it one was. The head office is still in Leeds and it is a typical British Supermarket but now with a n expanding non-foods section.

Both ASDA and TESCO in the UK are morphing into the Walmart type of supermarket that you have in the USA, except in ours the liquor is in the main building alongside wine and beer.

Sainsbury and Morrisons both now have non-food sections, but they are samll compared to the amount ofspeace devoted to foods.

When on vacation in the USA we prefer Walmart to Publix or Target as it is a once stop shop for all our vacation needs.

A suet pudding is a steamed sponge type dessert made with suet which is beef or mutton fat. They are sold in cans but better made fresh.

In the US Wal-Mart has a very bad reputation. They are a cut-throat, cut-rate mass retailer. I seriously doubt they are unionized but I'm feeling too lazy to check. They pay minimum wage with no benefits. Several states, counties and cities have tried (with varying degrees of success) to keep them out of their jurisdictions. They've also IIRC been sued by various government agencies over their refusal to provide medical insurance to their employees. Some studies have shown that they are destructive to local economies as they drive other businesses out of business and the minimal pay and no benefits ends up costing the local governments in two ways. Their tax income drops (all those run out of town businesses) and the demand for safety net programs like Medicaid and Food Stamps rises. Their customers are stereotyped as dumb hicks (look up Wal-Martian).

Wal-Mart is also one of the biggest companies on the planet (third largest public corporation) and has no compunction about throwing its weight around to get what it wants.

Yup, thats the Wal-Mart we all know and hate. Couldn't have said it any better myself. I was just surprised to hear that they could have unions in Europe. Didn't seem possible but I guess it is.

Many managers in Europe like Unions, because then they have someone to talk to

But co-determination is required by law in Europe, so they have to be sensible

Yeah, different strokes for folks in different jurisdictions.

Its employees are not unionized in the United States, where the retailer has become infamous for its staunch opposition to labor groups. Even in Canada, it closed a store after workers there organized. But in the United Kingdom, Wal-Mart touts a growing roster of union employees and has negotiated contracts with entrenched labor groups in Brazil and Argentina for decades.

Good article, thanks.

So it appears that Wal-Mart will put up with unions if they're pretty much required to by government (national or local). Interesting.

One last question. Is it accurate to say then that, at least in the UK, there is no store named Wal-Mart? Only Asda?

and palo5,

Co-determination? Not sure what this is.

"required by law in Europe"? Does this mean that if enough people want a union in a certain geographic area within Europe they must be given that opportunity? Does this apply to the UK?
