Yes, and the relations - as you can imagine - are not always friendly.

So Asda = Wal Mart? No wonder I couldn't find them. So if Asda = Wal Mart in the UK, is it the same name on the continent?

Does anyone here actually shop there? What kind of reputation do they have?

Here in the US, Wal Mart doesn't have a very good reputation. They used to be used pretty much by the poor but thats changed as a lot more people are now going there due to the economy.

They don't pay their people a living wage nor do they have any kind of health insurance. Apparently people start earning about $8.50 per hour and in six years wind up making about $12 per hour. They are non union and swear to never let a union in (which is why I was confused about them having unions in Europe). There is a joke around here that when you start working for Wal mart and you receive your employee paperwork, you also receive paperwork for food stamps and Medicaid. Don't know if its true but it wouldn't surprise me.

Asda never had that good a reputation,My Sister worked there for a while ,So I imagine being bought by Wal-Mart hasn't improved Their standards of Employee relations. As a supermarket brand,They're mid range not the very cheapest but not the dearest, they vie with Tesco for the "Cheapest Weekly Shop".

Asda did have a policy of actively employing 'mature' workers (those over 50) - but they've recently abandon this. My cousin did work for them, very briefly, as a 'meeter and greeter'. He would stand at the entrance and say "Welcome to Asda - how can I help you?". They pay their workers' the national minimum wage rate which is currently £6.08 per hour (about $8 per hour).

They were the first supermarket, in the UK, to introduce self-service checkouts. Also, I've noticed they they adopt the procedure of 'pack 'em high for quick sale'. So desperate are they to cut costs their shelving is made of cardboard.

So Asda was purchased by Wal Mart. That means any unions present during the sale were probably grandfathered in. That sound about right?

Are they only a supermarket? Here they're "big box stores" which means they have these huge stores which have a supermarket (pretty poor selection) and almost everything else you can imagine.

ASDA is cheap and looks cheap. Compare it with Morrison's where everything is presented in an attractive manner yet where prices are roughly similar. And they still have trolleys where you have to insert a coin to get them , a bloody nuisance as you have to remember to take one.

I've never worked for Asda, but I do shop there - in fact I publicized one of their special offers in the beer thread (don't rush, it's over now). It's as good as any other supermarket, I suppose, though it has the advantage, if you're paranoid, that it doesn't have a "loyalty" card, or a tell-Tesco-everything-about-your-life card as I call it. As Mal says, it's mid-range; the equivalent of Walmart in the social scale here would be something like Lidl or Aldi. All the big stores here sell other goods beside food, but not really on the scale I understand Walmart do.

What on earth is "spotted dick?" A quick google search really didn't help much as I'm gathering that pudding can mean something other than the term I'm familiar.

Saw this in the grocery in the "Indian Foods" section. And had to take a picture with the phone.

Yes, that's correct.

We have different union laws here in the UK than you do in the US. Unions were very strong at one time - but from about the early 80's their power and influence diminished.

No. We have Tesco (the biggest in the UK), Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Waitrose (up maket), Marks & Spencer (up market), the Co-op.

We have 'mega' stores with the likes of Tesco and Asda in the forefront.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:

Spotted dick is a British steamed suet pudding containing dried fruit (usually currants or raisins) commonly served with custard. Spotted refers to the dried fruit (which resemble spots) and dick may be a contraction or corruption of the word pudding (from the last syllable) or possibly a corruption of the word dough[1] or dog, as "spotted dog" is another name for the same dish with the use of plums rather than currants. Another explanation offered for the word "dick" is that is the German word for "thick."
