Same applied to the Queen Mother - she was a royal consort and therefore couldn't become Queen upon the death of her husband.

Prince Charles is next in line should Queen Elizabeth II die/abdicate.

It's called the line of succession.

I'm not a royalist. I'd be happier if they all buggered off. They can stay there as tourist attractions but I'm not happy paying for them through the tax system. Most of them aren't worth a pinch of shit.

Got it! Thank you Dumbassgo! I'm sure I'll sleep better tonight without all that royal confusion whispering in my ear

The scary looking guy is actually one hell of a bloke.

He knows that pc means Police Constable and not some sort of mind control system invented by failed academics.

Well he didn't propose nuking the commies, but he was very rude about our preparations for the Olympics, I would suggest that if he doesn't know what he is talking about he should simply STFU and look stupid instead of speaking and proving he is!

The news on this side of the Atlantic is just full of stuff that he supposedly said. Wondering about the preparations for the olympics? What were the republicans thinking when they nominated this guy?

Actually, Mitt is the presumed nominee. He's got the delgates to get the nomination, but it won't be official until the convention next month. And in answer to your question about what the Republicans were thinking, they weren't.

The Republican primaries must have been dispiriting to any thinking Republican registered voters, and of course there are plenty of such. The selection of Mitt Romney is self-explanatory once you check out the people who ran against him. After months of searching, all the anti-Romney allies could find to run against him in the end was Rick Santorum; even right-wing Republicans looked askance at this fellow's blatant religious bias, his rhetoric against the existence of schools. One by one, the other would-be nominees turned out to be stark-raving-mad (eg Michele Bachman); mere balloons inflated by their own vanity (eg Hermann Caine); or total mediocrities who crack under the slightest pressure (eg Governor Rick Perry). The last surviving rivals were Newt Gingrich, whose entire career has been based on opposing things and who has not one positive achievement on his record; Ron Paul, whose idea on how the state should work seems to imply that Attila the Hun was a pinko-liberal ... and Rick Santorum. Mr Santorum questioned whether the taxpayer should be asked to support the existence of an education system; I'm not making that up. This was what he actually, genuinely said to cheering supporters at a rally in Ohio:
Quote:
The idea that the federal government should be running schools, frankly much less that the state government should be running schools, is anachronistic. It goes back to the time of industrialization of America when people came off the farms where they did home-school or have the little neighborhood school, and into these big factories, so we built equal factories called public schools. And while those factories as we all know in Ohio and Pennsylvania have fundamentally changed, the factory school has not.
~ source: The New York Times. My my.

So I suppose we now know why Mitt Romney is the presumptive Republican candidate. Even most Republican voters believe in principle that children should go to school and learn stuff, including how to interact with other kids of their own age, live in a country where there are roads and infrastructure, and not have to call a hypocrite phoney like Newt Gingrich "Mister President."

As for why Mitt Romney is in the UK at all, I can only say that the UK Borders Agency is in a state of crisis; he must have slipped through the net. Presumably he is in town to enjoy the Olympic Games. I have read that David Cameron will see him and grant him a useful photo-opportunity, after refusing to see Francois Hollande when Msr Hollande was a mere candidate.

I am a huge fan of the "Carry On" movie series, especially those made between 1958 and 1966. In the movie, "Carry On Sergeant," and again in, "Carry On Constable," I heard the term "taking the Mickey." I was wondering what it meant.
Thanks!
