I empathize with all of the above comments and so sorry your dad ruined Christmas (Marcimus), and I respect everyone's reasons to celebrate Christmas even those who have no beliefs. For me it is a welcoming joy to look forward to each year but for me too it adds something a little " je ne sais quoi", and I feel sad when it is all past by the New Year. I remember when I was a boy I was so disappointed when as soon as Christmas day had passed all the TV adverts changed to 'Sales' or holidays and not one Christmas advert remained. Once the build up had climaxed into the day itself all that followed was less enjoyable.

That is more or less how climaxes are supposed to be like though.

Personally i'm not a fan of everything Christmas, of course i liked it as a kid (lights! presents! decorating a tree! presents!). Now as an adult the holiday season is something i just wish to be over fast...

i don't mind people liking it, but i wish it would be less stuffed in our faces all the time. And less of a commercial thing, but i realize that is impossible.

edit: i remember my mom used to delay taking down our Xmas tree until almost february

Oh dear that sounds a bit "bah humbug". Yes there is the commercial elements but I now find the competition to produce TV adverts that are more appealing than the other competitors also fun and entertaining. They have come a long way from the ads in the sixties, more imaginative and funny, or heart-rending. Who knows what else will help us celebrate Christmas in the years to come.

Yes but at least with sex you can climax for often than once a year. At least in most relationships.

I don't mean to be like that though. And i certainly won't actively spoil the Xmas for others, that would be mean.
But man am i happy when it's all over, i'm just not good with these social things (and usually in hindsight of family/holiday obligations i think " that didn't go so bad after all")

I remember when we didn't get the Sears Toy catalog until after Thanksgiving, and every holiday had it's own season. Now they all blend together, and I was once thrown out of a local retail store when I chanced upon them putting up Christmas decorations in September. "Are you fucking shitting me?!" I said without thinking, and one of the "suits" observing the setup of the display called security on me.

Lately our family has started celebrating Thanksgiving more and more instead of Christmas, it's more in the spirit of Grace.

I recall, when out kids were little, one of their friends telling me that Christmas was Santa's birthday.

I am just about able to tolerate the event but the jolly and happy aspect as if it compulsory pisses me off. I am a miserable bastard 364 days a year so what should be different? Why should I take a day off?
As for the religious aspect, I remember midnight mass filling up when the pubs closed and you could get drunk on the breath of the celebrants before the service was over.

Lol I too remember the Christmas congregations slurring their hymns, nodding off whilst waiting to take the Eucharist, and burping loudly during Hail Mary. The carols were always sung with gusto though which added atmosphere. It was always a change to see the miserable old battle axes that usually sat at the back and tutted when a girl who came in wearing too short a skirt and too much make-up, become lovable grannies filled with Christmas cheer, greeting everyone as they left the church with a friendly smile and reverence.
What will make you less miserable?
