I really shouldn't like fast food this much, but Arby's is the other place I occasionally go to; they have one around the corner from Taco Bell where I live. Arby's is a fast food restaurant that serves quasi-roast beef instead of burgers, and used to advertise: "Tired of Burger Burnout?"
In the last few years, they have moved into what they call Meatcraft, and have diversified from old-school beef sandwiches to also having gyros with tzatziki sauce, pseudo-French submarine sandwiches with au jus [aka. "French Dip Sub"], angus roast beef sandwiches, and brisket. They even have an angus sandwich with three cheeses and bacon, which could rival Taco Bell for calories if you ordered fries and/or regular soda with the sandwich. But I'm trying to lose weight, so I think I'll hit the gym today instead of going to Arby's. |

I hit the gym and burned 12 calories [!] on the treadmill, but did something great by finishing an entire 10-machine circuit worth of unfamiliar machines on my first try.
Of course, this wouldn't justify Taco Bell or Arby's to undo all progress. So instead, I went to a gas station / convenience store two exits west of the gym, and grabbed two Jack Link's meat strips and a Coke Zero without calories. I suppose that convenience stores are a form of fast food? If they are, maybe they're healthier than McDonalds et al. |

I hit the gym again and did close to 100 calories on the treadmill in about 20 minutes. I know what you're thinking, I'm just getting back in condition after a few weeks off; I should be at 200-300 by December. So on my way back, I took advantage of a free soda coupon at Speedway, and it was diet soda. No food if I'm trying to cut the calories out this time?
But every now and then, I hit Starbucks with those all-day-deals on Breakfast Sandwiches (their healthier answer to the Egg McMuffin at Mickey D's)... And I typically have an Ethos water rather than a coffee or Frappuccino calorie bomb. Even though they wouldn't like the comparison, I think that Starbucks is blurring the distinction between fast food and coffee shop. They're even starting to put Starbucks stores out in the middle of nowhere, just like a McDonald's; this I have observed on road trips out in rural Missouri, Kansas, and eastern Colorado. Best fast food in Kansas is in the city of Hays, KS, at Taco Grande within the city limits! |
