I'm surprised that no one has said, in my point of view the most obvious candidates.
Peter Cushing as Van Helsing and Christopher Lee as Count Dracula.

For me two actors that made the film their own, Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger in The Heat of the Night. One of my favourite films ever.

yeah, I'd have used Nicholson's role as Robert in 'Five Easy Pieces' or McMurphy in '... Cuckoo's Nest' as his defining roles above his role as Jessup... They were back when he acted rather than showboated... Those were the days!

Another actor?

I guess Robert Shaw will be forever remembered (rightly or wrongly) as Quint from Jaws...

Yeah, I chose a poor title for the thread.I didn't mean the role that shaped the actors career, but rather a role that was pure magic. We do a lot of critical threads-I was trying to do one where we celebrate the greatness that's out there

@eelcat- I wasn't aware Lee played Dracula. That's a wonderful role for him.I'm off to the video store!

Wow anky I'm totally shocked, it is the role Lee is most known for. the still of Lee as Dracula snarling with his red eyes and fangs is iconic!
You must look this up mate, it was by Universal and there were several in the Dracula series of films. I nearly shit myself as a kid watching these.

Smile Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun

Leslie Nielsen as Lt. Frank Drebin in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)

I can't imagine anyone else in that role, he was brilliant.

Quote:
[Frank Drebin is emptying out his files after being kicked off the force]
Frank: Hey! The missing evidence in the Kelner case! My God, he really was innocent!
Ed: He went to the chair two years ago, Frank.
Frank: Well, uh...
[Frank Drebin quickly shoves the evidence back into the file cabinet]

Yepper! I looked it up and instantly recognized him I was never really aware of him before Lord Of The Rings came out, then Star Wars.looking at his credits on IMDB, there's lots of films I've seen him in, and didn't realize his stardom.
