Assuming they eventually get round to building the thing a wire grate over the offending exhaust port should work a treat.
If they'd had it in the original Star Wars they could have finished off the Rebels in the first film and no sequels would have been needed.
Mind you, that would have denied us the sight of Carrie Fisher in a skimpy slavegirl's costume.......
Perhaps Darth Vader knew that, the incestuous old perv, and vetoed the grate?

It was ray shielded, but obviously the sub contractor (possibly a distant cousin to Northrop Grumman) used inferior materials or didn't take into account the rebels having torpedos instead of blasters.

All you have to do to invade us is to knock out the power grid. No puters, iphone, nets or mp3zzz, oh god what will we do. Girlz power will save us and superheros. Quick, dude in basements get your cape. Since we couldn't detect a commercial airline on 811 the airplane grid foreign aggressors will have a pearl harbor day. They have the tech, we gave it to them so a few could become wealthy so they could move out. An army could walk through the border. Few troops in-house, most reside in some sand country. Oh God, contact the Death Star and blow us up, fast!

Don't feel so dejected gentlemen, while Death Star money is apparently unforthcoming, the brain trust has also cut off funding for these other useful objects or programs:
1. Study into the pycho-sexual ramifications of the architectural design of the Guggenheim Museum.
2. The first, truly practical, Left Handed Wind Shifter.
3. Nuclear Powered External Combustion Engine
4. Division by Zero

Honestly friends, in your zeal for a Death Star you have obviously forgotten who was going to build it.
The same people that brought you:
The Edsel, The Chevy Corvair, The Ford Pinto (with Firestone 500 radial tires), Quadraphonic Stereo, New Coke, Cheez-Whiz, the Spork, 24 hour News, Kim Kardashian, The Mars Climate Orbiter (currently located across several square kilometers of the Martian surface), The Mars Polar Lander (currently at the bottom of the impact crater it created), The Mars Observer (which waved at Mars as it blew past it. Currently headed for Andromeda) a fleet of Space Shuttles (2 of which are no longer in perfect operating condition) and the worlds first, self igniting jet aircraft (The Boeing Dreamliner)

Are we really the people you want building this thing?
