Yeah, I know what you mean. I actually saw it happen today. I was walking to the canteen for a cuppa & one of the lads on the stretch wrappers collared me & asked me if some shrink-wrapped stock was OK to send out. I looked at it & it was rubbish so I told him to send the full pallet back to the line with the instruction, from me, to check all of the stock on that pallet, probably about 30-35 minutes worth of checking time. 10 minutes later it was back at the wrapper. The lad got me & said that it was back so I took another look & it was still shite. I went to the guy running the line & asked him what he was playing at & he, to his credit, didn't lie but simply said "Oh, I thought you were on your break & I thought I could get it out before you came back"!!! That is the production mentality. Now the full run is in Quarantine awaiting 100% visual inspection & he is up for a bollocking. Banging your head against a wall would sometimes seem to be the easier option. But I will remain to fight the fight.

About a year ago I started watching a program on the DIY network about a building contractor named Mike Holmes (who's Canadian). He goes into places and, basically, rescues people who have given contractors thousands of dollars to do various jobs only to botch them so badly the people are stuck with a house that is almost worthless. The contractors are thieves and, through their lobbyists, have gotten the laws changed to the point where the owners have no recourse. The builders are protected from their shoddy workmanship. And this is in Canada! Where I live in the US its basically the same. Have fun trying to sue a building contractor. The laws are all on their side. So we used to be pretty good with quality.... But that seems to be changing fast. |

The technical term for this fraudulent behaviour is "creative dismissal". You make cuts by making the staff chose to leave. The most blatant example of this fraud was explained to me by an engineer form British Telecoms. All the office staff like him were told they would go on the tools, and all the blokes working outside on the tools were told they would have office jobs. He had been in the job on the tools for a year and the inadequate training after twelve years in the office made him admit he was useless and could not find a fault, but he was doing it to pay the mortgage. They had a buddy system going whereby he woulf phone a bloke in the office who had been on installation for decades to help him out. Likewise the office wallahs would phone a bloke working outside to make sense of the paperwork.
All broadband comes from BT lines and when new legislation comes in that means broadband advertised speeds are truthful if 10% of subscibers receive that speed has to be changed to 75% the the clusterfuck that BT is running solely for the benefit of shareholders will have to be addressed. |
