Some news panelists are rushing to the defense of the four black teens in Chicago who kidnapped and tortured a mentally disabled white man — saying the savage attack was not, in fact, a hate crime and that Donald Trump is ultimately to blame.

NBC News correspondent Ron Mott and CNN political commentator Symone Sanders have both gone on the air and claimed that they believe the teens were simply acting out of stupidity, rather than racism.

“You look at it on the surface, you think kids can make some really poor decisions from time to time,” Mott said Thursday during an interview with MSNBC’s Craig Melvin. “They made so many errors, if they were truly trying to be criminal, to obviously broadcast your crime is not a smart thing to do.”

Speaking during a panel discussing on Wednesday night, Sanders argued that the teens’ actions were the result of a hate-filled election season — and that the media should be blaming President-elect Trump for stirring up emotions of anger and hostility in people across the country.

“I just want to remind folks that we cannot sit here and ignore that — at least for the last year on very public display — the worst parts of America have been brought from the fringe into the mainstream,” the former Bernie Sanders spokesman explained. “That affects people on both sides. We’ve talked about white nationalists and white supremacists and the KKK, but there also, when this inflammatory rhetoric is out there, when someone is repeatedly telling you that your community is the worst of the worst, it brings out the worst of the worst in people.”

The four teens — identified as Jordan Hill, 18; Tesfaye Cooper; 18; Brittany Covington, 18; and Tanishia Covington, 24 — were each charged with a hate crime on Thursday along with felony aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery.

But Sanders said she believes the attack — in which the four accused teens yelled "Fuck Donald Trump” and “fuck white people” — was being completely mislabeled.

“That is not a hate crime,” she said. “Hate crimes are because of a person’s racial ethnicity, their religion, their gender, a disability, it isn’t your political leanings, because someone doesn’t like you’re political leanings and they do something bad to you, that is not a hate crime.”

While Sanders refused to admit that the teens appeared to target their victim because of his skin color, Mott said it could appear so. But he feels their actions were those of criminals, and not racists.

“When you add in the criminal element here, the fact that they stole someone’s vehicle, the fact that they apparently broke into a house where this alleged attack took place, the fact that they, you know, physically harmed this young person, held him against his will and then apparently, you know, texted the parents demanding some sort of monetary exchange to send him home, it goes beyond just stupid decisions by kids,” Mott said.

We all know that teenagers are stupid (because we have all been teens at some point.) I wonder how these bozos missed the obvious fact that Trump was a creation of the media. Oh, that's right, these bozos are members of the media.

°laughs° For the question tof be so easy your answer sure does miss the mark. If is was as easy as "pressing their beliefs" that racial minorities would be better off or the gun safety people for that matter would have at least expanded background checks seeing that when polled 90% of the US people want them. The Stonewall riots happened in 69' ( I will leave the jokes to your own design) by 2015 they had the right to marry that is less than 50 years by contrast the NAACP is going on 108 years old and the upper echelon of most racial minority groups get second class citizen treatment. I guess they have not press their beliefs enough?

What would happen to communism/socialism if everyone suddenly became (at least) comfortably well off and had an acceptable standard of living? There'd be no need for it and it would practically vanish overnight. That's a lot of 'jobs' down the pan.

I think you are both right and wrong here. I think you are wrong that they do not want these changes, you are right that they would not like if they achieved them, but I also think you are wrong that it is primarily a need-my-job issue.

I spent all my adult working life at universities and I have encountered plenty of social justice campaigners of all kinds - ranging the whole spectrum from people with perfectly genuine grievances all the way to the bat-shit-crazy. The latter are simply zealots and genuinely believe the shit they preach, just like religious zealots - and often they are also conspiracy theorists very much of the same ilk as flat-earthers. Yes, they do want a job where they can do their stuff full-time, but that is not dissimilar to religious fanatics becoming full-time missionaries.

The "they would not want the changes..." is an interesting argument. I think they genuinely want them but think they are unachievable. It's a bit like asking a preacher: what if noone in your congregation committed a sin since you last spoke to them, if they had all been good people, what do you preach then to them? The reaction is kind of the same: they never believe perfection is achieved, if _you_ believe that you are guilty of some sort of sin of your own, and even if at some point in time by some freak coincidence noone was bad then you have to tame your thoughts. Religious fundamentalism and ideological fundamentalism have an awful lot in common.
