I notice I have one on my public profile page.

Is this good or bad?

It's all good, I have 20

nothing to worry about.
When you register, there's an option to type in an referral ID.

someone read a post somewhere or you told someone about the forum
they signed up and put you in as a referrer

thats how it works i think ?

Yes. Basically, when you refer a new member,
upon registration, they will have an option to type your
user name in the *referred by* field,
as the person who referred them to the forums.

Each time people add your user name as the referrer,
this will incrementally increase the referrals number.
