The risk is less now as its not been done for a few years and there are more and more people who do not pay their bills in full. However there is nothing to stop another card company doing what Egg did a few years ago. They stopped the cards of over 160,000 people who paid their bills on time each month in full. They basically want people to spend more than they can immediately pay back because in many cases those people have the higher interest rate cards. For example some will be paying an apr of over 35% compared to others paying as low as 6.4%. You will also find card companies continually increase peoples limits if they are spending a lot but paying the minimum back because they want them to spend even more.

I use cash to pay for anything in a store that is less than $100.00. If it is more than that I then use a credit card. In these days of Identity theft it does not pay to carry and even use a credit card too often. I once heard that people that use credit cards very often and also use debit cards and use ATM machines are more likely to have their identity stolen that those people who don't use those things often. I also will use a credit card to but something online, but I don't use my bank credit card for that. I use a different card. I read once that if one makes purchases online with a credit card it should be with a card other than the bank card. This also has to do with identity theft.

Cash mostly for me too. For me, it helps keep my spending habits in check and like most other members have already said, it doesn't leave a paper trail behind you.
But there are certain things I use a credit card for because there are special deals, at least here in the U.S., where if you charge enough on your card, you get money back at the end of the year. Plus credit card companies here in the U.S. are very good at catching fraudulent purchases on your account! Definitely a credit card for gas and groceries and online purchase, and cash for the rest!

Cash 95% of the time. I never spend what I haven't got. I only use my debit card if there is no handy atm, and never use credit cards.
If I ever need more I have a couple of good friends I can borrow from until I have it, or just save up for what I need. I've not purchased anything in the past ten years on the 'never-never', and likely never will again. Got myself into a small rut before then, and don;t like to make the same mistake twice... it hurts. What infuriated me recently, was in my bank sending me one of these new cards where I don't even need to enter my pin; when I complained they said it was the only sort they were now doing. Hate the thing, and only carry it if I have need to use it that outing, or leave it at home. How can these new cards be secure if they can just be swiped over an electronic gizmo without having to prove its your card any more? Incredulous!!! (contactless i think they call it?)

Just wondering.
Has anyone with a credit or debit card bought one of those wallets that are supposed to make sure you cannot be scanned? Went out looking for one a little while back and really couldn't find diddly locally. Looks like online is about the only place to find one. |

I have conducted a little experiment over the last few months with a new credit card I applied for. Initial credit limit of £5K with no interest for 24 months. So instead of using cash I used my card for everything including my future break away and ran a bill of around £3.5K up. I can pay it all off as the money to do so sits in my bank account but I chose to pay the minimum amount. That amount is around £35 a month whilst no interest is being added. After 3 months of doing that I have now been offered a credit limit rise that would give me a total limit of £7.5K. Now they do not know I have the funds to pay the full amount off, all they see is the minimum being paid. Yet they still offered me the chance of another 50% more credit. As I wrote earlier credit card companies want you to be in as much debt as possible and are willing to throw money at you.

Interesting snowy25. When I used my Credit Card frequently, my limit was raised automatically over time. I used it as a charge card and paid off the balance each month. I have never paid interest. I was charged interest once for a late payment, but complained and had it refunded. I rarely use the card these days, and the Bank has written to me to lower my limit, so I guess they are assuming some responsibility al last. I left it high as you never know when you might need it, and they were happy to do so.
I use it for most purchases, mainly for the security it adds to any transaction, but I simply let Mrs alal do most of the shopping.

Don't have a credit card. I use to use cash, but with touch and go available everywhere now, a card is more convenient and since it's a debit card linked to our bank accounts, we can only spend what's in the account.
