London, sadly, is full of idiots. In one inward commute I encountered two sudden u-turners in front of me forcing me to test my ability to control the bike when braking; one deliveroo bicycle carving across a main road with no regard for other vehicles or even his own life; several pedestrians walking across snowy roads as oblivious to traffic as though they were gathering flowers in their own back garden.

I parked the bike on Wednesday morning and left it there until Monday evening.

Your forgetting there are a whole range of things that mean the road is a dangerous place even in good weather

sleep deprivation - has same effect as being drunk
substance abuse - the ice epidemic is across all ages , dope slows reaction times
stress - might as well be asleep - driving over a roundabout is something to see
inexperience - 16 year olds on the road - not old enough to drink but
in vehicle distractions - gps , hands free mobile phones
morons - still drunk from last nights/early morning binge
foreign drivers - for some reason are allowed to drive on our roads with no testing

some elderly drivers - my grand father who could only see black & white blurred shapes
used to sit a foot from the car in front - he kept passing the driving test by memory
same course same routine every year - after he'd backed over his 3rd cyclist he called it quits

It is very simple mathematically. Half of all humans are of below average intelligence. In truth only those in the top quartile of the Bell curve can be regarded as really smart. Therefore, tripling the population increases the number of not smart people by a factor of 9 while only increasing the number of smart people by a factor of three.

This is the reason we have so many people that jeopardize our future as human beings by illegally logging in protected forests, destroying world heritage sites, polluting the shrinking amount of potable water, overfishing, etc.

But you are correct that even the smartest among us have only a very limited understanding of the vastness and complexity of reality. The difference is that truly bright people are very much aware of how much they don't know; the less bright are convinced that they are much smarter than they are.
