In my previous post I probably equated analogue with mechanical. Sorry for that.
I just browsed a bit on utube and found an interesting post of a master of traditional watchmaking. The restoration of an old pocket watch caliber (movement) of M. Großmann by Steffen Pahlow. Karl Moritz Großmann (* March 27 1826 in Dresden, † 23 January 1885 in Leipzig) was a German watchmaker in Glashütte (Saxony). The company M. Großmann and the company Lange were joined by a long successful relationship. This collaboration has spawned several inovations in the art of watchmaking. Watchmaking, Restoration of movement M. Großmann 3955. Have fun. part one part two part three part four part five part six I could spend hours watching the man at work. I'm quite clearly in the wrong profession. |

I own four watches, 3 analog and one digital. And all of them need work. Two of the analog are wristwatches my dad owned and I think they both need batteries. The other analog is my pocket watch, which belonged to my maternal grandfather and it needs to have the springs rewound. The digital was my high school graduation present from my parents. It hasn't worked in about 30 years, and I hope that a new battery will get it up and running, oh yeah, it needs a band as well.

After I posted yesterday, I took my pocket watch and the digital watch to the jewelers my family has been using for decades. I was right about the digital watch (a Bulova, BTW), all it needed was a new battery. I still have to get a band though.
The pocket watch needs a new mainspring and a few other minor repairs and will cost between $225 and $250. The jeweler told me the watch itself is only worth about $250, but since it was the pocket watch of the grandfather I never met, it's completely worth it to me. I also need a fob for it.

Aw, man. I thought it was "Anal Log" . . . probably another thread.
Well since I'm here. My watch is a modest analog Victorinox Swiss Army Men's watch.

Quartz analogue. After two Rolex watches kept losing time on my wrist and keeping perfect time when off, I asked a pal who had done an apprenticeship at Rolex for an explanation. It happens wa the entire content of his helpful reply. A Longines quartz was the fix. They actually make their own movements with a stepdown transformer which increases battery life.

I buy the cheapest possible (last one £5) watch from Argos/equivalent. Always analogue and very plain black on white - no frills.
They still last for ever and I find you don't have to read an analogue - you just instinctively recognise the hand positions and take it in with no mental effort required. |
