What does it mean -

Hi there shar9!

Picture hosts Imagebam and Imgbox are closing.

Since they are popular picture hosts here at VEF, Imagebam in particular, this will leave a lot of posts with dead links.

Under normal circumstances posts with dead links would be tidied up & removed as soon as spotted but since the loss of those image hosts is going to have a large scale effect the Moderators are helping out by making an exception. Leaving posts with dead Imagebam and Imgbox links at least two months after the image hosts go dead.

This will allow those that can the time to replace their posts.

. And why not 3 months, or 15 months? Is there any logical explanation for this period of 2 months?

It was picked as a starting point. It will most likely be extended beyond that.

Hi there shar9!

I see that the 2 month limit has now been clarified:

"Please note that 2 months is merely a starting point, not a hard limit, and this will probably be extended beyond that time. We ask that members attempt to edit their existing posts with the rehosted images instead of making new posts. This will lessen moderator workload."

The moderators have only been aware of this issue as long as the rest of us, so we must expect a bit of time for all to adjust.

As for why a limit at all, not being a Moderator myself so it's only my guess, I'd say that realistically the forum can't stay with thousands probably even tens of thousands of dead posts forever.

Those with hundreds of posts, like myself, can fairly easily repair their links (managed to replace mine by hand already) while those members with posts in the thousands will struggle to do so.

Many other members will be currently inactive or incapable of replacing.

We will have to accept there will be some lost posts at the end of the day.

I tend to look on it positively, even the most devastating forest fire can actually clear the way for new & fresh growth.
