Duke University against the University of North Carolina!

in college basketball, there is no greater rivalry! maybe in all of college sports.
located only eight miles apart, in the same conference, and the same state.

In basketball, I agree that Duke/UNC is #1, but don't tell the Ohio State and Michigan football fans that the NC rivalry is tops. Or 'Bama/Auburn fans or Harvard/Yale or USC/UCLA or Lehigh/Lafayette or Cal/Stanford.

But most colleges have bitter rivals. It isn't as intense as it once was, but Canisus and St. Bonaventure was as bitter as the Duke/UNC rivalry. It was a rivalry based on the fact that Canisius is an urban Jesuit school, while Bona is a rural Franciscan school.

And I maintain that the biggest rivalry in all sports is Army/Navy. It transcends sport. Take a Mongolian general and a Chilean admiral who have never seen American football played, bring them to the Army/Navy game and they'll know who to root for.

I'm surprised someone from outside of either city mentioned this.

IMO, this rivalry is just as bitter as the Tyne / Wear derby, but it dosen't get the same press.

I'm sure Sammyshirt will agree with me.

I've been to all the derbies in recent times, and can state that the whole day is unlike any other game.

The buzz of going to your local rivals 'patch' to support your team is undescribable.

India vs Pakistan, in any Sport. Especially Field Hockey.
Holland vs Germany, football.
Birmingham City vs Aston Villa, football, It's now a tradition, where the riot police surround the pitch during the closing stages of the game...

Any Aussie Rules football match in the old VFL, forget the AFL, because in the good old days, Every Team was from Melbourne/Victoria...

true, but this isn't just my own personal opinion. countless sports reporters
have said the same thing of the Duke/UNC BB rivalry as being the best
in college sports. people that actually get paid for voicing their views.
(and no, not Dickie V!) the close proximity of the 2 schools, the number
of players to go on and star in the NBA, and both have had top notch
BB programs for years!

between Mike Krzyzewski and Dean Smith alone, their stats are legendary;
1,763 wins, 142 tournament wins, and 6 National Championships.

and yes, the Army/Navy rivalry is towards the top as well! but when was the
last time either team won a National Championship?

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with the experts who say that the Duke/UNC rivalry is tops, I'm saying don't tell those other fans that their favorite rivalry takes second place. And many experts use the fact that a lot of Duke players aren't as great in the NBA as they were in college is a black mark against Coach K. But what I ask, is it Krzyzewski's job to win games for Duke or prepare them for an NBA career?

And as I said before, Army/Navy transcends sports. If a nation has shoreline, it has a navy. And if there's navy, there's a rivalry with the army. The British Navy gets all the pub, but the army had some of the greatest military victories in world history.

I don't care if Army or Navy wins on the playing field. Just as long as they win on the battle field.

BTW ballyhoo, are you a Blue Devil or a Tar Heel?
