Günter Rössler - The DDR's Helmut Newton
Any other fans out there of
Günter Rössler I came across great photogroaher whilst reseraching nude photography in the old East germany. I think he should receive more (posthumous) praise for his excellent work from the 50-80's. Günter Rössler (born on January 6, 1926, in Leipzig and died there on December 31, 2012) was a German photographer and photo-journalist who got famous for his artistic nude photographs which made him the Helmut Newton of the East Biography Rössler studied at the "University for Graphic and Book Design" in Leipzig. Since 1951, he worked as freelance fashion and advertisement photographer, as well as photo journalist. He started shooting nudes in the 1960s and was one of the pioneers of the genre in the DDR/GDR and shot a lot of his one of his models Kirsten Schlegel who became his 2nd. wife. In the time between 1954 to 1990, Rössler was mainly contributing to DDR fashion magazines like Modische Maschen , the monthly magazine Das Magazinand photo journals like Fotokino-Magazin. His first exhibition of nude photographs in "Kunsthaus Grimma" in 1979 made big waves in the GDR. However, his pictures were not considered offensive and even school classes visited this and following exhibitions of the artist. He recieved more awareness in 1984 when Playboy featured him in Mädchen der DDR.
