Hi guys (I know Iam one of those lurkers).
Being an expat born and raised up in the golden triangle of fish&chips land (Bradford,Harrogate,Leeds) I miss my haddock&chips with pickled onion of course!
Also pork pies and mushy pies and the good old Bradford curry finished off with copious amounts of Tetleys hand pulled bitter/mild.

Bugger guess it`s not financially viable for them then, although i do think they`re missing a trick .Mind you been a few times when i`ve wished the local takeout hadn`t done deliveries. Last September i was in Kingsbridge and over three separate nights i ended up ordering the worst Chinese (The Jasmine) Indian (Taj Mahal)and pizza (Pizza planet) i`ve ever had , and ok maybe the first two had a bad night and it`s was a one off which sadly arrived at my door.As those type of establishments are usually a bit hit and miss risky , but a pizza ?. How the hell did they mess that up , i mean apart from failing to cook it properly and giving me less cheese rather than extra. Also the chips i`d ordered were pre-salted , never a good sign

I am also part of the Yorkshire diaspora. I have particular fond memories of the original Harry Ramsden's fish and chips restaurant (yes, I said restaurant) in Guiseley, near Bradford. Harry Ramsden used to get up in the middle of the night and drive to Scarborough or Whitby to buy fish fresh from the quayside, then sell it to hungry customers same day. Harry Ramsdens is a global brand name now. I have eaten in outlets in Great Yarmouth and Heathrow Airport as well as various shopping centres. I have no complaints about the fish and chips, but they are no longer special. Does anyone get up in the middle of the night to go to the fish market right next to the fish dock and buy that night's catch so it can be cooked and eaten the same day?

Tell me the name and place of a fish and chip shop anywhere in South East England where they do this and I will camp out on their front doorstep.

However, if you should just happen to be going to Tobermory in the Isle of Mull (you know, like you do) there is a little van on the side of the harbour which sells fantastic fish and chips, and bloody good scallops as well. Don't waste the opportunity if you are ever there.

Hi scoundrel yep you're spot on I think the most memorable fish&chips I've had was at Harry Ramsdens in Guiseley many years ago in the posh restaurant I didn't have a shirt and tie and got a funny look from the head waiter who gave us a corner table I was with my mother. I ordered halibut&chips absolutely delicious!

What about a good old fashioned mega calorie pie? Steak & Kidney, Chicken, Ham & Gravy. The Aussies make fantastic pies. I was in pie heaven everytime I was out there. & their sausage rolls are great too! Just avoid mirrors and bathroom scales for a while and tell yourself it's research/having holiday fun.

I couldn't believe my eyes the first time I was the the US. No wonder so many people are mega fat. I was in a steak house one time and the steak was the biggest i've ever came across, plus it had a shed load of fries pickles etc. I spent the rest of the day in bed.
