Here is a list of the most successful male comedy double acts(some had to change their names or take new names to become a success.) (This won't mean much if you're not from here-sorry)

Peter Cook & Dudley Moore aka Pete & Dud (both dead)

McGuinness & Mead-aka Syd Little and Eddie Large aka Little and Large (both alive)

Thomas Derbyshire & Robert Harper- aka Tommy Cannon & Bobby Ball(both alive)

Eric Bartholemew & Eric Wiseman-Eric Morecambe & Ernie Wise- aka Morecambe & Wise-(both dead)

Ronnie Barker & Ronnie Corbett-aka The Two Ronnies (both dead)

There were others many of the below are also such as:

Bud Flannagan and Chesney Allen(Flanagan and Allen) Bud's real name was Robert Winthrop-Flannagan was the name of a brutal Sergeant-Major he had in the army) Also belonged to a music hall comedy act called 'The Crazy Gang'

Les Dennis & Dustin Gee(died 1986)
Norman Hale & Gareth Pace-aka Hale & Pace(both alive)

Lennie Bennett & Jerry Stevens(both dead)
Mike & Bernie Winters(both dead)
Stephen Fry & Hugh Laurie aka Fry & Laurie(both alive)
Patrick Fyffe and George Logan a drag act called Hinge & Bracket(Dr Evadne Hinge & Dame Hilda Bracket-opera singers) (both dead)
Robert Newman & David Baddiel aka Newman and Baddiel once part of The Mary Whitehouse Experience with another double act Steve Punt & Hugh Dennis(Punt & Dennis) mostly on the radio then transferred to television. (All alive thankfully.)
Jim Moir(Vic Reeves) & Robert Mortimer aka Reeves & Mortimer (both alive)
Mel Smith(dead) and Griff Rhys-Jones(still alive) aka Smith & Jones

Not many women double acts but the most successful was probably(and still is occasionally) Dawn French & Jennifer Saunders aka French & Saunders(both alive). And not forgetting the superb and sadly late Victoria Wood & Julie Walters(still alive) as Wood & Walters.

There were Elsie and Doris Waters who played radio duo "Gert and Daisy" in Workers' Playtime on BBC radio in the 1940s and beyond.

They were sisters of Horace John Waters who went under the stage name of Jack Warner. Yes, he of "evening all" Dixon of Dock Green fame.

Also Jack Docherty and Moray Hunter - Part of the "Absolutely" team who made the wonderfully offbeat series "Mr Don & Mr George" which was sadly unnoticed but brilliantly surreal.

Of course there are others who also had their own shows but I didn't include Mel & Sue(about as close to being a female Morecambe & Wise as you can get) as they are women and this was for male double acts of which there are considerably more but French and Saunders were by far the most successful female double act. I wouldn't obviously remember Gert and Daisy let alone the Crazy Gang or for that matter Jewel(Jimmy) and Warris(Ben) I only put the names of double acts I would have seen and remembered.

I'm wondering about Benny Hill and Henry McGee.

They were never officially a double act but Hill was always very generous about McGee's role in the success of his TV shows - a very able and adaptable actor/straight man who could be infectiously funny in his own right.

Benny Hill was probably more known for his 'stooges' like Nicholas Parsons, Bella Emberg and of course Jackie Wright(the bald-headed man) I don't think he was ever part of a major double act, so Henry McGee like Bob Todd, Anna Dawson and others were just stooges. They were all good foils to Hill and of course his friends off screen as well.

I can't believe that nobody has mentioned those giants of comedy, the Chuckle Brothers

I left them out because they weren't doing stand up routines or face-to-face type comedy on mainstream television. They were around in the clubs for a long time but believe it or not it was on childrens' BBC(as it was once known) dressed in dog costumes as the Chuckle Brothers that they made their mark-one belting the other in a comic way in comic situations. Thankfully they then ditched the costumes and were themselves(Paul and Barry) and became a cult amongst the young and the old alike. Yes they were a double act, but not known by their names for it...to me, to you!
