Fred Slaughter, a member of UCLA's first NCAA basketball championship team, dies at 7

Slaughter was the Bruins' starting center from 1962 to 1964. His team soared to a 30-0 record in 1963-64, the school's first undefeated season that also led to the first of Wooden's historic 10 NCAA titles.

On the court, he was part of the starting five that had guards Walt Hazzard and Gail Goodrich along with forwards Keith Erickson and Jack Hirsch — a lineup that ranged from 6 feet 1 to 6 feet 5. The players looked to Wooden, who devised a winning 2-2-1 zone defense known as the "Bruin Blitz."
Slaughter excelled away from the arena, winning election to senior class president and earning a degree in business administration and an MBA from UCLA. He also attended law school at Columbia University before launching a successful career as a sports agent and attorney.

In 1995, the New York Times described Slaughter as the “dean of black sports attorneys.” His many clients included such Hall of Fame basketball players as UCLA great Jamaal Wilkes, Clyde Drexler and Dennis Johnson.

Actor and voice actor Gary Dubin has lost his battle with bone cancer. Dubin was 57 years old.

He played Punky Lazaar on The Patridge Family, voiced George in the American dub of Cowboy Bebop and Toulose in The Aristocats.

That's how unfair life is someone doing something positive that deserves life perishes and then some thugs

Filmmaker Ted V. Mikels passed away yesterday.

STARBURST is saddened to learn that another bastion of low-budget independent cinema, Ted V. Mikels has passed away, aged 87. Born Theodore Mikacevich in 1929, Mikels began acting at an early age and started making films of his own stage performances before founding a production company. After writing and directing his first feature, Strike Me Deadly, in 1963, he began to amass a filmography that, while never quite hitting the mark in the commercial realm, is much-loved by fans of grindhouse and horror movies.
As a director and producer, he was well loved and respected. Some of his best-known films include (as director): The Astro-Zombies, The Corpse Grinders, Blood Orgy of the She-Devils, and The Doll Squad. He was still making films into his eighties, with Paranormal Extremes: Text Messages from the Deadreleased last year.
A pioneering filmmaker to the end, Mikels died on Sunday, October 16th.
Everyone at STARBURST’s thoughts are with his family and friends.

I just found out now. The only film I saw of his was Ten Violent Women, which was a pretty underwhelming film, the Women-in-Prison portion I wished was longer. I haven't seen his more famous films, yet, but I'll keep an eye out. May he rest in peace.
