À bout de souffle (1960)
Trailer Petty criminal Michel Poiccard (Jean-Paul Belmondo) steals a car in Marseille and shoots a cop who was chasing him. Wanted for murder and with no money, Michel goes to Paris and turns to his American love interest, Patricia Franchini (Jean Seberg), a student who sells the New York Herald Tribune on the streets. Michel asks her to come with him to Rome after he's collected a debt owed to him by a guy called Antonio. But Patricia is not sure if she loves Michel and the ambiguity of their relationship begins to pave the way to disaster. I'm not sure if this is a romantic drama or a crime film borrowing from the noir genre. But what I'm sure of is that I'm not a Godard fan. In a film of 90 minutes, 30 minutes are wasted on a rather childish apartment scene in which the main characters torture the viewer with their uncertainties. I love French cinema and Breathless is supposed to be among the quintessential works of nouvelle vague but, unlike Francois Truffaut or Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard bores me to death and I've seen quite a few of his films. The jump cut technique he employs here doesn't impress me either. All that made this enjoyable for me are the majestic scenes of late 50s Paris and the beautiful Jean Seberg who committed suicide in 1979. |

Nebraska. The black and white story of a cantankerous old man who thinks he's won a million dollar sweepstake. All he has to do is go to Lincoln Nebraska to pick it up from his home in Montana. and it falls to his bemused son to take him.
Talk about minimalist, but it's full of heart and bittersweet moments. |

Just finishing a cracking film as I fear the next one will be a major lemon
Dog Soldiers (2002) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280609/ A group of soldiers are on a training exercise in Scotland when they come under attack from an unexpected source, werewolves The opening scene sets it up nicely as the main characters who fall out will shortly meet again in harrowing circumstances in the main feature. Great special effects, well acted and plenty humour. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX9S3hdgZ5g

now for the film of which I had very low, almost zero expectations
The Legend of Halloween Jack (2018) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7601296/ The latest film from Andrew Jones, the Welsh Ed Woods, whose films so far have largely been derivative shit with kindergarten special affects and hammy overacting from the likes of Lee "I hate Nazi's" Bane Thankfully Jones has moved away from the idiotic "based on a true story" bullshit that was used on almost all of even his most nonsensical early films I have however developed a strange magnetic attraction to his films, I have to keep buying them for two reasons 1- to see is he gets any better 2- for lots of unintended laughs Set in Dunwich (any why not ) after a suspected killer is released when his trial collapses due to police messing up his arrest the police officers involved decide to take matters into their own hands and mete out their own justice killing the suspect Jack Cain They all swear to keep the secret but one year later and one of them unable to live with the guilt commits suicide over the place where they buried Jack's body, when the cops get there one of the officers who killed Jack finds that his body is gone. It isn't original in any way as it takes elements of lots of films such as Dark Night of the Scarecrow, Halloween and even Carrie in the final scene. For an Andrew Jones film however this is a reasonable attempt, maybe 3 out of 10 and trust me if you have seen some of his earlier shit that is a marked improvement, helped as Lee Bane's role is pretty small, he plays a hard man yet again, but thankfully isn't required to put on a dodgy American accent, there are other dodgy accents here but I can forgive that as for once I was not tempted to eject the disc at any stage. Message for ordinary film fans, only watch this if you are drunk or want a laugh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hq5oQnJFzy8

Eighth Grade (2018)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7014006/ During the final week of 8th grade, a girl named Kayla realizes that she has no friends, she is not popular, she has no self confidence, boys her age might as well be extra-terrestrial aliens to her. She loves her dad but at the same time she doesn't want him around asking her a lot of questions when she is trying to have a social life on the internet and in school and to make things even more complicated and worse, high school is just around the corner. A sincere and sadly at times brutally honest and harsh look at the state of today's middle schoolers and their culture today: where most of them have cell phones and their own accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube; and their personal struggles to survive in a digital world where every day for them is an online popularity contest among their peers. There were even 2 scenes showing how the middle schoolers were being drilled by the police and by their teachers on what to do during an active shooter situation: it's sad that the world has come to this where an innocent child can't even be safe in school. If 15 year old actress Elsie Fisher, who played 13 year old character Kayla, doesn't get nominated for an Academy Awards, everyone at the Academy can go to fucking hell!! This movie was rated 99% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and for once, I agree with them. I give it a very enthusiastic: 5/5 |

Malevolent (2018)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2386237/ Jackson and Angela are a brother and sister who run a paranormal investigating, fake ghost-busting scam using the real experiences of their mother's life and tragic death to get publicity Angela briefly sees something in a house they are hired to investigate but assumes it was set up by the boys, she later finds out it wasn't and starts to have doubts .... and the odd nose bleed. Angela refuses a request to investigate an old foster home believed to be haunted but after Jackson is beaten up by someone he owes money too she reluctantly agrees to help. Jackson assumes it is another false haunting and they can scam their way out of it, they slowly piece together the history of the house with lots of young girls murdered their mouths stitched up by the killer who was the owner's son. Angela however pretty soon starts to see frightening visions of the dead girls with their mouths sewn shut, as they search the house the floor collapses under Elliott and he falls into a hidden room and breaks his ankle and soon they uncover something really evil in the East Wing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vn1nqbIaby8&vl=en
