Christmas is for Religion
I was baptised CofE , attended a Methodist church for 15 years from my early teens, married a Catholic girl and raised my three kids in the Roman Catholic beliefs till they were old enough to decide what they wanted to believe, and although I rarely attend church or any religious building I still believe that Christmas should have a basis in celebrating the birth of Christ and enjoy this time of year because of that. I know it's all about giving and receiving presents , eating traditional food till you burst, watching one off shows or classic films and comedy specials but underneath it all does anyone still enjoy the celebrations associated with Religion. That may be carols, midnight masses, the Nativity, school plays about Mary and Joseph or anything else that originated from celebrating His birth? I am not one to act Evangelical but if you celebrate Christmas are you just joining in with the season's frivolities or do you have just one little regard for why it started in the first place. Yes I know Yuletide has existed longer and it was a decision by higher authorities to plump for December to celebrate the birth but the fact that why we call it Christmas is due to Christ , or is it time we reverted to the word Yuletide, and just celebrate the year ending?

My family are Jewish, as kids my sister and I celebrated Christmas with presents, a tree etc BUT we still celebrated our own one, Chanukah. To us it wasn't the religious aspect but we were probably one of the only Jewish families to have both - and we still do, they are both joyous family occasions and there are of course similiarities between Chanukah and Christmas as there is with the Last Supper and Passover. All religions are linked but it depends how you are brought up. Do you have to be religious to celebrate Christmas? Do you have to go to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve? It depends how religious you are and no you don't have to be religious, because evens Muslims and other religions have Christmas too, maybe not with all the commerical crap that you get nowadays but they will celebrate it in their own way.
For some Christmas is a painful time of year due to the loss of loved ones but for others it seems to brings out the humanity in people-which is a shame because it should be every day and not just at Christmas. So with all that in mind Happy Chanukah and Happy Christmas one and all.

Although baptised C of E, I eventual 'found' my Christianity through hardship and tough times. Was welcomed without judgement and felt emotionally supported as I rebuilt myself. Christmas is my time for reflection, consolidation and giving something back to others if I can. I respect other religions and have met many from other faiths, for the most part they are very much like me. Faith gives you strength when you most need it. Has nothing to do with commercial avarice, gluttonous behaviour or opportunistic greed.

On the other hand, religion is a delusion, and the fact that many share it does not make it real. Since the whole thing is a fiction, it makes no difference what you call it or how you mangle the myths. You can't call it Yuletide without honouring pagan gods, and you can't do the whole Father, Son ns Holy Ghost thing without swallowing an old pre-Christian stable of three dieties. Just enjoy the food and friends, chum.
