The Advanced Tactical Fighter was conceived in the eighties with Lockheed and Boeing designing and building prototypes. The YF-22 first flew in 1990 and was declared the winner of the ATF competition in April 1991. The first F-22 production model flew in 1997.

The Joint Strike Fighter project was conceived in the nineties with contract for prototypes being awarded to Lockheed Martin and Boeing in 1997. Lockheed Martin's X-35 and Boeing's X-32 first flew in 2000. Lockheed Martin was declared the winner in 2001.

What's "just a little too convenient"?

In fact, on the basis that the U.S. military has been introducing new aircraft ever since the U.S. Army bought a plane from the Wright Brothers in 1909, what on earth do either of these have to do with 9/11?

Then he got real mad, when he found out the moon landings were faked and Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were only orbiting the earth, He vowed revenge on the US government.

So, he faked his own death, fled the US in 1977 and moved too the middle east and lived quietly as a goat herder for many years plotting the 9/11 attacks on the US

In other words, the projects were well advanced long before 9/11.

The Advanced Tactical Fighter programme was initiated to develop a fifth generation fighter to replace the F-15's and F-16's. That decision was made in the eighties, so had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11.

The F-15 and F-16 have been in service for almost forty years and were designed to 1960's specifications! They were due for replacement whether 9/11 happened or not!

The Joint Strike Fighter programme was initiated to develop a replacement for a whole host of ageing NATO aircraft. Again, that decision was made long before 9/11. The UK, Italy, Canada, Australia, Norway, Turkey and Denmark pumped millions into the project. The UK government selected the JSF as a replacement for the Sea Harrier in January 2001. The JSF was going to go into production whether 9/11 happened or not!

I'm sorry but I'm really struggling to understand your point. Are you suggesting that if it hadn't been for 9/11 "conveniently" happening, the US and all the NATO countries involved in the projects wouldn't have ordered modern aircraft? If that's not what you're suggesting, and they were going to order modern aircraft anyway, what's 9/11 got to do with it?

All valid points, and I've lost count of the number of times a super new aircraft proves to be less "super" than expected ... or claimed!

Just jumping around a bit, I do think the article comparing the F-22 to the Me262 is verging on the ridiculous! The Me262 was introduced at a time when the Luftwaffe was suffering from a shortage of pilots, fuel, spares, maintenance facilities, lubricants etc. etc. They had their backs to the wall and had pretty much already lost the war. The 262 engines were notoriously unreliable and had a limited life, and the 262 itself was most vulnerable when taking off and landing. In essence, the 262 concept wasn't flawed; it was the fact that Germany was in a no win situation and I can't really foresee a comparable scenario in which a foreign power has total air superiority over the U.S. mainland!

It's interesting to note that the U.S.A.F originally planned to purchase 750 of the new ATF, but the number was reduced on several occasions prior to 9/11. It was then further reduced after 9/11, so if there is a direct link between 9/11 and the F-22, it can only be that post 9/11 the U.S. government saw less of a need for the aircraft ... but personally, I don't think there is a direct link!

With the F-35, there's the political situation to consider. The U.S. has a host of partners in the programme, so they couldn't simply pull the plug without seriously pissing off their NATO partners who've invested hundreds of millions of dollars, and I'd suggest that would be counter-productive!

Whether we all actually need fifth generation fighters is open to debate, but I really don't see how 9/11 was a "convenient" excuse to order aircraft which had already been designed and tested. Having spent billions on the projects, the F-22 and F-35 were going to enter service whether anyone really wanted them or not!
