Unless I'm missing something really drastic there's not much to know about tor. Download, install, add on an adblock of your choice and get busy. Buttsie knows a thousand times more than I ever will about tech stuff but that's all I did and it seems ok.

This is nothing to do with ISP's, it appears Zippyshare is blocking UK visitors, see here for story:

All blocks on either side look for your IP address

past issues with it - ie filesonic - were only ever overcome by using a VPN

If you use a service that re-routs you through their servers outside the UK
you wont be blocked presumably

You can test your anonymity with a couple of links on this page
after the VPN reviews and what service not to use

Just grabbed a file from loops/old stuff on Zippy, using TOR.

You may have to try a few "Get a new tor circuit for this site"
refreshes to get initial access, then fiddle with enabling various
No script blocks, but got it at max speed in the end.

Is zippyshare blocked in germany now as well? i tried it with a german vpn address and got the same message as i would without it. Tried it again with a dutch one and it worked fine.

Definitely blocked in Germany one of my friends there just got back to me saying he's got the 403 message now but was able to download from there last week so it is a new development.

There are several reasons for the closure:

– Since 2006 we have been on the market in an unchanged form, that is, as ad financed/free file hosting. However, you have been visiting in less and less over the years, as the arguably very simple formula of the services we offer is slowly running out of steam. I guess all the competing file storage service companies on the market look better, offer better performance and more features. No one needs a dinosaur like us anymore.

– All sorts of adblockers, whether built into the browser, as add-ons, or in the form of DNS services. Sure, we all use them, but they take away any control the site owner has over the site. Eventually we get to the point where a vicious cycle begins, in order to pay for the server infrastructure you are forced to place more and more ads, then users fire up more and more adblockers and we get to a point like today.

– Rising electricity prices. Over the past year, electricity prices have gone up 2.5 times, which, with a large number of servers, gives a significant increase in costs that we have no way to balance.

There are still a bunch of smaller reasons, but we could write a book on this, and probably no one would want to read it.

To sum it up, we can no longer afford to maintain the site.

This is a first for me in my long history of downloading. In the past it was "what happened to Rapidshare???" "Where the hell is Filesonic?" "The end of free downloading!"

To be given such a heads up with a date certain.
