I am talking about the lengthy undeclared war going on in Central America, the resumption of war in Columbia, right wing regimes in Turkey, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Feel free to throw in all the police killings of unarmed blacks in this country, it's less than a thousand per year, but ten times greater than the number of police officers killed by black people. How long before Brazil is a military dictatorship again? You could probably put Putin's Russia in the right column, too.

We have made reforms with the idea of creating more competitive districts and electing more middle of the road legislators. Unfortunately the Republicans went off the deep end and are reduced to nominating carpetbaggers.

The Democrats at the helm are off in lala land and will soon make utter fiscal hash of the state finances. So re-balancing is on its way. It will just take a bit.

The minute the Republicans stop the race baiting, they can move substantial numbers of Asian and Hispanic voters their way. The bloc of middle ground undecided voters is nearly as big as the Republicans at present. (44%D, 22%I, 26% R and don't believe that 44% is solid) But the GOP insists on ideological purity and promoting an agenda that just won't fly here.

To give you an idea of the nuances, there are many Democratically run cities in this state that are not on board with the sanctuary movement and many of us in other blue cities that want to see immigration rationalized, but do not believe that this country can run without officials observing their oaths to uphold the law. Even Latinos are uncomfortable with it. ("I followed the rules. Why should they get a pass?" but remember the rules were changed along the way.)

You have to understand that California was a Republican stronghold until folks started running on right-to-work platforms in cities with strong labor unions in the '50s and '60s. The final straw came with the race baiting that started in the 1980s.

When push comes to shove grownups understand that you meet in the middle. Get away from the radicals in the wings, and you will find a lot of common ground.

We've got this annual TV awards here called The Logies, for best, most popular blah blah blah.

An old TV personality here, Bert Newton been in the industry for decades and has hosted those awards many times but not much in recent years, this year the venue was changed from always in Melbourne to 1st time ever not and in Queensland so they thought they would give an old hand the honour of it's first hosting elsewhere.

Newton was recalling some of his old colleagues now deceased, several of which were known to be gay way back when it was shunned altogether.

He made a few jokes about them and said they were great mentors, and how at times they would mentor in private in dressing rooms

It's funny to us knowing the old personalities, got a laugh from the audience, but guess what

The PC brigade didn't see making gay jokes as appropriate anymore and have called for Newton to be banned from hosting, attending the event and even banned from TV altogether

The historical truth of that time is not allowed, instead we have a version of history akin to Disney's cringeworthy Pocahontas movie with noble, proud, insightful Indians, but John Smith is portrayed as a bumbling (male) fool as are his countrymen.

Even David Hepworth writing his review for Empire magazine pointed out that the bumbling English are in fact taking over the known world at the time.

This sort of PC snubbing happens a lot, Enid Blyton is treated as a racist, as is Agatha Christie - you won't find a copy of 'Ten Little Niggers' only 'And Then There Were None' the PC re-titled version.

Actually, no the UK did not do that.

It was precisely because those people were not British citizens that they could be deported, or refused permission to re-enter the UK.

They were people who were Jamaican citizens or of some other Caribbean or African nation who had been granted 'indefinite leave to remain' in the UK.

This means if you subsequently decide to leave the UK, and go and live in another country, perhaps your country of origin, you have no 'right' to come back into the UK.

Most of these people could have applied to register as a British citizen after five years of residing in the UK, those who were caught up in the recent and in my opinion regrettable deportations were those who never took that step.

The media and some MPs tended to say 'these people are British', the fact was and is, they were not.
If they had been the problem simply wouldn't have arisen.

I don't mind criminals being killed and being a white senior citizen have little to fear myself. The world is being turned into surveillance police states or areas of lawless anarchy. Presumably we all live in the former.

If you live in the United States now, the police can pretty much kill you or seize your property with impunity. Both political parties are complicit in creating this world. Be grateful that we are mainly left alone. Try not to do anything that will put you in harm's way. (P.S. if you are black, you are in harm's way.)
