In Iraq they hang you if you can be proven to have "served" with ISIL in any capacity whatosever, even as a janitor. But the chances are that these Beatles didn't spend any time in Iraq, so sending them there is probably not a solution.

I would prefer the Americans to have them, but only provided they go to the mainland USA and face trial in a recognised judicial system. The relatives of all their many murder victims have a right to see this happen. If America wants to behave like some piss-in-the-corner banana republic and not bother with due process, then it would be more just and fair to make them suffer in Syria at the hands of the people they so miserably abused and tormented when they were in charge.

Good luck with that. Since they were British citizens at the time, the U.S. press gave very little coverage. Few people in the U.S. know about the four, much less care.

I suspect Vannax thinks it is a war between Western civilisation and the entire worldwide Muslim community. His concept of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners as POWs in a war which will never end seems to imply this. I have no use for such ideas.

IMHO the ISIL terrorists are criminals and any of them who are or ever were British are traitors worthy of death. There is no "war on Terror"; there is a criminal enterprise and a campaign of law enforcement. We are far too inclined to be lenient - for example I read far too many sympathetic renderings of the story of the three East London schoolgirls. I am deeply disappointed in the Russian Federation for only killing one of them but it has recently been reported that a second one is "feared dead" - why "feared" I do not know, as far as I am concerned, the good news has not yet been confirmed, that's all.

But in any and all cases where an ISIL is taken prisoner, there should be a trial on the facts and the accused must have the right to speak. There should not be any acceptance of excuses; but the facts should be proven before the accused is convicted and hanged, and if the case does not stand up, then the accused has to be acquitted and allowed to leave. These are the rules of Western civilisation; I do believe the sixth amendment of the US constitution has something to say on the topic. Apparently.

Interesting. May I ask why a civil protection unit has to flee abroad when even Islamist militants enjoy general amnesty from the Syrian government if they lay down their arms?
