Yeh, things like the IROC series or even the BMW M1 Procar challenge in Europe way back were great

Here in Australia they had a couple of one make races featuring local touring car and the occassional F1 or international driver and while a lot of our 'big names' did just as well in these as their normal cars there were some careers launched by others who were right up amongst these stars

I can remember many years ago, when the British Grand Prix was televised, there was a full set of races on the day, including a race of identical Minis driven by the F1 drivers, with the same starting grid as the Grand Prix. It was done for fun, but the drivers took it very seriously once the flag dropped.

Default retirement

Alonzo announced his retirement from F1 this morning. will be strange not to have him running for some team. he was entertaining to watch. still very talented even at his age. who will be next?

He's not done racing... we'll probably see him compete in the USA.

Meanwhile... Carlos Sainz Jr. has signed a multi-year deal to drive for the McLaren team.

I thought Alonso had already said he was moving to Indy Cars?

He only said that Indy Cars was a possibility. Rumors are going around regarding McLaren fielding an Indy car next season, and Alonso possibly testing a 2018 Indy car.

Nothing's firmed for Alonso. He'll finish out the year and hopefully be appreciated as one of the greats.

Alonso is one of the greats - certainly in the Top 20.
Would have won more titles if he had been able to stay with a top car - though I guess we can say that about many drivers.
Puzzled about Riccardo leaving Red Bull.

It's a shame Alonso's F1 career hasn't finished with a flurry of success. But I suppose he long established himself as an all time great, and stats in motorsport don't always tell the full story. Hopefully his passion for racing means he'll be a professional racer even into his 50s.
