In the calendar year of 2016 there were 334 murders in New York. In the financial year 2016-17 (1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017) there were 102 murders in London, suggesting – but not proving - that at that point the UK’s capital’s murder rate for any given 12-month period was less than a third of New York’s.

Similarly, New York had 352 murders in the calendar year 2015, while London’s Metropolitan Police recorded 109 homicides between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2016.

Yes, but from the same article it states. "The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that it recorded 15 murders in February, while in the same month the New York Police Department (NYPD) recorded 11 killings. In March London also had more murders, albeit by a very slim margin: 22 to New York’s 21."

I accept that 2 months data isn't indication of a permanent shift, but as someone who lives in London but grew up in NY i can say with confidence that there is a clear negative trend in the safety and the perceived safety of London's streets. Low grade harassment and property crime is ignored (unless racially charged where it is pursued ruthlessly) and there are areas where I wouldn't enter. Young men are empowered and emboldened by reaction to crime and crime fighting - it's weak and wishy washy - so commit more and more crime.

Is that a mandate to arm police - maybe not. Does it demonstrate that asshats will kill and maim with other weapons if firearms are difficult to obtain - you bet it does.

Never thought I'd see the day when there has to be a discussion of the Right to Keep and Bear Cutlery. Remember, forks don't kill people, people kill people.

I read there is going to be another school walkout tomorrow, on the anniversary of Columbine (and Hitler's birthday, incidentally), organized by - well, not the children.

They'll be calling for gun bans again, same old, same old.

But none of this really addresses the core issue - why are kids going into schools with assault rifles these days and shooting their schoolmates?

I was thinking, the modern school shooting era roughly correlates to the "modern era" in porn, i.e. with shaved-bald pussies. Interesting cultural coincidence, yes?

It also is closely related to the spread of so called social media - phones, Facebook, etc. IMO.

Yes, true. There just seems to be an "alienation factor" at work in society today. It's hard to pin down what all is causing it, but it's there.

Even before the internet, tv and newspapers wouldn't report on suicides because they knew that would precipitate copycat suicides.

Vietnam was the first TV war, and the daily reporting had its impact.

In the internet era, there's no such filter(s). Reporting is almost instaneous and global; and news is bad news. It also allows like-thinking groups that were geographically remote to both communicate in real time but also insulate themselves from alternative thoughts and views.

And now in 2016 we see the active propogandizing of medium. Slowly, we're beginning to see the backlash against this - as in the shutdown of Backpage. (not that the owner of that appears to have been a pimp in all but title).
I think we're seeing the end of the golden age of the internet.

And exactly how many people have been fatally spooned recently in the UK? And do the stats distinguish between salt, tea, soup, dessert and table spoons?

We use to have a phrase - "Going postal" - regarding workplace violence. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going_postal However, that phrase has fallen out of use since postal employees no longer seem to be in the news for killing their co-workers, supervisors and other bosses.

I doubt that the few bullied school children who are idiotic enough to use a gun at a school will refrain from that activity like disgruntled postal employees seemingly have.
