I've looked at all the posts,saw most of my favorites, but, I did not see:

Barbarosa - with Willie Nelson and Gary Busey. A slightly gritty and off kilter story.

Rustlers Rhapsody - With Tom Berenger, Andy Griffith, Marilu Henner and Patrick Wayne. A comedy.

This is one of the great Anthony Mann westerns and one of James Stewart’s first cowboy outings; it has often been observed that he showed an acting range in the Anthony Mann westerns which he rarely showed in other films. In Winchester 73 he is the revenger, who has for years been pursuing his quarry, a man who calls himself Dutch Henry Brown. We know it is in revenge for murder of someone they both knew, someone who taught both of them marksmanship, from the dialogue in the shooting contest scene, in which they discuss their quarrel in code and Brown, played with a nice display of sociopathic malevolence by Stephen McNally, calmly admits his guilt and displays his scornful lack of remorse; in fact he taunts his pursuer. They are in Dodge City and Marshall Earp and Sheriff Bat Masterson are in earshot (hence the coded nature of the conversation) but Stewart’s Lin McAdam has no intention of referring the matter to the authorities. He means to take care of business personally.


The plot follows the fortunes of the rifle for which these two enemies compete. It is extremely special, a modern weapon beautifully made, no mere mass produced object. Everyone handling it treats it with some reverence, like a diamond with a name; even the worst villains are respectful and admiring when they handle it. But it resembles a named diamond in other ways; it is jinxed and brings ill fortune to everyone who owns it. Having been mugged for it by his enemy, Lin McAdam chases it across Wyoming and Montana. But the fact that the man he means to kill did not kill him when he clubbed him down and stole the gun is significant and adds mystery to the story.


Variously the prized rifle falls into the hands of thief and murderer Dutch Henry Brown; a cynical and unscrupulous Indian trader ; the Indian chief to whom he wanted to sell guns, but who murdered him for the Winchester; a weak and untrustworthy wide boy called Steve Miller, who was present when Chief Young Bull was killed in a skirmish with US cavalry; a bank robber and 100% bad hat called Waco Johnny Dean (Dan Duryea in a fine performance as the real heavyweight villain) and finally back with Dutch Henry Brown.


The other unifying theme is the story of Lin McAdam, whose adventures evolve around his quest for the rifle and the man who stole it. Bad luck dogs the men who “own” the rifle; good luck starts to find Lin McAdam as soon as he loses the rifle. He finds the trail of his enemy; he avoids death at the hands of Young Bull’s hostile tribe and indeed was there when the cavalry battle occurred and fired the shot which settled matters for Young Bull. He tracks down Waco Johnny Dean, who is associated with Dutch Henry Brown, and kills him in fair fight. He liberates the heroine (Shelley Winters, who looked rather tidy in 1950) from captivity with Waco Johnny and allows her to transfer her affections to himself; they are relatively recent acquaintances but have crammed a lot of history into a short time frame, and their new relationship makes complete sense. Finally, he manages to have a bit of a chat with Dutch Henry Brown; their “conversation” discloses a quarrel straight out of the Old Testament.


At the end, both girl and rifle reside where they belong and Lin McAdam has won the battle with his enemy and with life. It is dark, grim, and dramatically very satisfying. Winchester 73 is a classic western in the grittier 1950s tradition.
