However, I do appreciate this is the rotten luck thread so I'll shut up now.
Same, AAMI ( I always liked that girl in their ads with the phone headset )

But I have a feeling the damage might be less than the excess
Hardly worth my time and effort.

What annoys me the most though is my Missus drove that Jetta around and I have my company car, but while she's without a car for a few days she'll have to drive the almost brand new XR8 I got earlier this year, that's been garaged at Mums and under covers, my idea was to keep it rarely driven

A few years ago my brother-in-law finally got his dream car, a second hand Ferrari; which he has since disposed of, confiding to me that some dreams are never meant to actually be realised.
Anyhoo, when he got it I asked my sister how she found driving it and he just looked at me and said. 'don't be stupid Mark!"

Friend of my brother.

Back in the day was a huge fitness fan, particularly body building.
This took a toll on said body which developed arthritis in multiple joints restricting his mobility until eventually a wheelchair was required. Over the course of several years he became depressed, abused drugs and alcohol and grew morbidly obese.

Unsurprisingly, he became diabetic which sometimes leads to the loss of extremities. In this case it was his foreskin which the medics circumcised. His penis developed a post-operative infection which necessitated an amputation following unsuccessful antibiotic treatment.

I kid you not.

So here's this man. Mentally and physically ill. Lives alone. Stuck in a wheelchair, housebound and denied what I assume for him was one of his last remaining "little pleasures".

I feel really sorry for him.

This one didn't happen recently, but it's probably my #1 rotten luck story.

In my first career 25 years ago, I got passed over for promotion. So I was at a career crossroad: I could double down on trying to get promoted the next time, or I could wind down my career and begin looking to start my next one. I chose the former.

A few months after getting passed over, I found myself sitting across from an officer in my Career Management Division. On a shuttle bus. She knew I'd been passed over... she knew how the system worked. She knew my odds. We started talking about my future. She started to advise me.

But Oh The Rotten Luck. As soon as she began speaking, the bus driver fired up the engine and drowned out what she said to me. I just politely nodded and she turned away after saying whatever she said.

Looking back on it, I think she said You're Not Going to Get Promoted This Next Time Either. But I missed her saying that. So I lost critical months that I could have used trying to start my next career... while I still had a job and a paycheck. Months later, when I finally saw the writing on the wall and put in my Quit Notice, I didn't leave myself enough time to land my new career while I still had paychecks from my old one. That put a mental and financial strain on me and my young family for over a year.

Damn that bus driver. Drowning out what I truly needed to hear.
