Not sure if it's been posted before, but a special mention should go to former Thai Navy SEAL Sgt. Major Saman Gunan who died after passing out underwater during an overnight mission to install extra air tanks inside the Tham Luang cave system, Thailand, where 12 young members and the coach of the The Moo Pa (Wild Boars) academy team have been trapped for over two weeks.

Saman Gunan was not on duty as he'd retired from the service - he volunteered.

People frequently wring their hands and wail to the heavens when soldiers die or are injured in a service they've chosen - however soldiers themselves very rarely do - they risk their necks because they're hewn from a warrior archetype and when called upon they step up with cool resolve and determination.

My sympathies go out to all of his family and friends.

He died trying to help others - He died really living.

R.I.P.

Default Lord Carrington

Former Foreign Secretary and last remaining member of Winston Churchill's government Lord Carrington has died at the age of 99. He famously resigned as a point of principle when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on his watch - a rare thing these days and despite his being largely blameless.

I met him a couple of times in the course of my work. He was a kind and unassuming man who always introduced himself as "Peter", never Lord Carrington, as he was keen to put people at their ease.

He owned many properties on his Buckinghamshire estate and not one of his tenants had a bad word to say about him. He really looked after them, charged very reasonable rents and was always kind if there was a difficulty.

He was of the privileged landed class for sure - but a true old-school gentleman nonetheless.

Quite, and resigned of his own volition because of what he saw as personal failures over the Falklands conflict.

Cut from a different political cloth - especially when you consider the kind of person who gets appointed the role of Foreign Secretary these days.

Default James Cowton - motorcycle racer.

James Cowton - motorcycle racer - has been killed in the final race of the Southern 100 on the Isle of Man.

Report here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/motorsport/44815725

This one is personal to me as James lived locally (to me) and I used to go racing with his dad, Fran Cowton, back in the day.... Both were regular visitors to the bike club I belong to. James was a really nice guy...

Here's hoping all the others involved in the incident make a speedy recovery.

RIP James...
