The other week while sitting on the panel of the programme "Loose Women", Janet Street-Porter said the Royals would not allow Megan's father to walk her up the aisle (actually it's called a "Nave", so I've no idea why most call it an "aisle").

Odd to think that it may be true. How would Street-Porter know this?

It really was not that hard to work out, her father had upset her by faking some paparazzi pictures some weeks ago, and he had also had a heart attack, which meant he was unable to attend anyway, as said this all happened a few weeks ago, she, the bride, was so furious with both her father and some other members of her family and some of their comments, that she had already asked Prince Charles to walk her down the Nave/Aisle?Whatever, and he had already accepted, so no genius, just the talentless anti Royal cow doing her usual false reporting. I hate that woman if you had not noticed!

You are correct - the central aisle in a cruciform church is indeed the nave..

I think it gets called an aisle because it is actually an "aisle". Whilst a nave is a term relating to a specific part of a church, an aisle is a non-church-specific general term and can be defined as a passageway between (for example) blocks of seats.

In church parlance the aisles are the two "aisles" either side of the nave, and usually separated by columns.

I think either term is correct but "nave" is more correct (if you know what I mean :-))

Not quite, the nave is the entire central area including the pews with the aisles being at either side. I read somewhere that the space in the middle is the central passage but no-one wants to say "taking the bride up the central passage". I don't know if that's true but it deserves to be.
